One Customer – Three Sets of Steinway Hammers Refelted
Hammer refelting is becoming an increasingly attractive way to renew existing piano hammer heads. By retaining the original hammer cores, refelting offers a sustainable and highly customizable alternative to replacing the complete hammer heads.
The piano technician can choose the desired felt compression — soft, medium-hard, or hard — depending on the requirements of the instrument and the desired tonal characteristics.
The choice of felt is yours as well: Standard Felt or ABEL NATURAL FELT.

What do you think about these holes in the felt?
These hammers were made in Asia. The visible holes are the result of voicing (needling).
But the question is:
How can this happen – is it too much voicing (needling)?
A high level of needling can raise questions about the underlying felt characteristics, such as:
• The amount and distribution of impregnating agent
• The effects of heat and compression during pressing
• The natural resilience and tension of the felt
The holes alone, of course, do not tell the whole story.
At ABEL HAMMER COMPANY, we believe a well-prepared hammer should provide the voicer with sufficient tonal flexibility without requiring excessive intervention into the felt.

Not because we like damaged hammers — but because they can give us the perfect rea-son to refelt them.
Old, worn or damaged hammerheads can often be given a second life through profes-sional refelting.
In approximately two to three weeks, we transform your existing hammerheads into fully playable, high-quality hammerheads — ready to be installed back into the piano.
The wood is carefully cleaned, the old felt is removed, and new felt is professionally fitted and riveted. Every hammerhead is carefully prepared to ensure a high-quality result — preserving the original components while giving them a new lease on life.
