Freedom of Expression in Times of Transformation
Artistic Processes and Cultural Policy in South Africa

The launch of the book
Save Havens Conference
Friday, 6th of December, 2 pm
AFDA: The School for the Creative Economy
Tasman Rd, Observatory, Cape Town

Are artists seismographs during processes of transformation? Is theatre a mirror of society? And how does it influence society offstage? To address these questions, this collection brings together analyses of cultural policy in post-apartheid South Africa and actors of the performing arts discussing political theatre and cultural activism. Case studies grant inside views of the State Theatre in Pretoria, the Market Theatre in Johannesburg and the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town, followed by a documentation of panel discussions on the Soweto Theatre. The texts collected here bring to the surface new faces and voices who advance the performing arts with their images and lexicons revolving around topics such as patriarchy, femicide and xenophobia.

Urban Transformation through Art and Culture - URBCULTURAL Agenda for Urban Transformation through Art and Culture, conference on cultural planning in the Baltic Sea Region

Urban Transformation through Art and Culture 13/06/2019

We would like to inform you about the conference Urban Transformation through Art and Culture taking place in Kiel, Germany, from 4 to 6 July 2019. The three-day event is a part of the Interreg Baltic Sea Region Programme project “Cultural planning as a method of social innovation” (UrbCulturalPlanning) and will include workshops, speeches, panel discussions and urban city walks to experience, sense and feel how urban transformation can be triggered by artistic and cultural actions.

You will find the program and the possibility to register for the conference at https://www.cultural-planning-kiel.de/en/home

The purpose of this gathering of urbanists, city planners, artists, researchers, politicians and activists is to explore new prototypes for integrated urban strategies as well as people- and place-based approaches to dealing with the social, cultural and environmental challenges many cities are facing. The key to this approach is the potential for art and culture to act as a catalyst for creative communities, seeking to engage citizens in the process of sustainable urban transformation.

We have invited experts from several countries, especially from the Baltic Sea Region, to create a forum of knowledge to inform, inspire and provoke the debate. We hope the conference provides a setting in which participants can engage and explore how to make a difference, creating a momentum for sustainable change.

Urban Transformation through Art and Culture Many cities today face unprecedented societal challenges. The needs are growing to tackle social inclusion and sustainable development, but the resources of the public sector are in decline or stagnating and new skills for citizen involvement are required as a response. Over the past two decades cul...
