Understand the basics. Surely that's the road, but what does it mean? My answer is not to look at simplicity or technique but to look for the underlying mechanical and tactical principles and in this type of training we do one combination at a time.

I love smart questions. When people engage with the training and bring their perspectives to the table, everyone learns. A teacher among students is just the first among equals. For my last stick fighting combination there was a question regarding grabbing the head in order to control and here's my answer.

Self-defense is a human skill, yet some groups in society face a significantly higher risk of victimization. One of the most fundamental examples is women.
Throughout much of history, patriarchal power structures, domestic abuse, and social norms have placed women in a more vulnerable position. The effects of these dynamics can still be seen today in harassment, objectification, coercion, and violence. While enormous progress has been made and these assumptions have been challenged for generations, many women still navigate daily life with an awareness of risk and a familiarity with fear.
If we want to build a safer society, we must continue to challenge harmful norms, hold people accountable for abusive behavior, and create cultures of respect. At the same time, we should strive to make every human being stronger, more capable, and more confident.
Teaching women self-defense is one part of that process. Honest conversations about violence, situational awareness, boundary setting, verbal de-escalation, and physical skills help demystify violence and place it where it belongs: not as the center of life, but as one tool among many. Empowerment grows when people understand both their vulnerabilities and their strengths.
Master violence. Grow trust.

Social spaces are like the organs of society. Often called third spaces, places such as libraries, parks, community centers, and churches provide a public room where people can gather, learn, work, connect, or simply access free Wi-Fi. They offer opportunities for reflection and belonging outside the spheres of home and work. Society needs places where people can be social.
At the same time, third spaces are not automatically peaceful. When people carrying loneliness, poverty, exclusion, addiction, mental stress, class differences, or other unmet needs share the same environment, the potential for conflict increases. Not because these individuals are the problem, but because these spaces often hold pressures that society has failed to address elsewhere.
The people who work in these environments need preparation. Awareness, conflict communication, and physical self-defense are valuable human skills. They should be trained hand in hand with empathy, care, and social work. Strong communities are built not only through compassion, but through the ability to navigate tension, maintain boundaries, and create safety when challenges arise.
Master violence. Grow trust.

Safety in numbers is an ancient truth. Humans gather in collectives to protect each other and increase productivity. For these purposes, we need shared narratives of cooperation — emotional bracelets that bind us together.
But on the other side of cohesion lies exclusion. Who is allowed to join, and who gets left out? In-group/out-group dynamics explain a huge amount of human behavior and remain one of the root causes of violence.
In today’s sociocultural landscape of Western democracies, we face increasing populist division. Breaking one part of the whole to create the illusion of a stronger group. Trauma-based coping mechanisms for an unsafe world.
Empathy is part of the answer. Building better narratives of cohesion is part of the answer. But both must be grounded in honest self-reflection and strong boundaries.
Talking to people you do not want to talk to is a tenet of democracy. Learning how to do that with both kindness and strength is part of taking responsibility.
When some part of us wants to break the peace, maturity means responding constructively under pressure. Not looking away. Not casting others out. Holding tension without becoming destructive.
Master violence. Grow trust.

My thoughtful and amazing partner just finished her third yoga TTC on Bali and now I am here to be with her. And during everything that was going on with her she found the time and effort to book me a private BJJ session at
When she told me about the opportunity, I was too shy and didn't go for it. But she got me the session anyways. Pushing me to go out of my comfort zone and devoting myself to my craft and growth all the time.
Without her I wouldn't have done this, but I would have missed out big time. Austin did a awesome class for me. Rolling gently, pointing out some flaws in my game and then helping me to get better tools. And then some proper rolling. He's clearly very skilled but was gentle and present during the whole hour. It felt really good to go for it. Thanks for the teaching.
Fear holds me back sometimes but I am working on opening up, showing myself and standing up strong. Here's to showing more heart and gratitude. Thank you, Xime for getting me this. I love you.
