"Chinese 101 - Ni Hao!": HAW Hamburg students had a crash course in Mandarin with the Konfuzius Institute Hamburg as part of their preparations for their summer school in Shanghai. The engineering and business students will be spending two weeks in September at HAW Hamburg's partner university, the University of Shanghai for Science & Technology (USST), and participating in a programme of academic and cultural exchange with company and cultural visits.

Engineering and salsa, calisthenics and quantum entanglement: Engineering major Faris Dababneh from Drexel University, has a life mission to be a “jack of all trades” and make the most of every opportunity life offers him. His study abroad semester at HAW Hamburg is adding another string to his bow and helping him grow in confidence and knowledge.
Faris has chosen a wide palette of subjects taught in English and is taking more classes than originally planned because he is enjoying them so much. His engineering classes in electrical engineering, software construction, electronics, and digital systems are enhanced by German, intercultural competence and quantum technology. ‘Electronics has taught me the most applicable skills, as the things we do in lab are almost exactly the things I didn’t know how to do during my last internship. I’m seeing my engineering confidence level grow with each session.’
This is the first time that Faris has been away from his family, so there was naturally a certain amount of intrepidation at the beginning. There were concerns about living in a country where he didn’t speak the language and wondering how he would make friends. It was initially difficult to find his pace and his support system, but as someone who values communication and collaboration he very quickly found his footing: ‘It was incredible to see how welcoming and friendly the students are here. I was incredibly happy to find myself with an amazing group of friends within the first few weeks just by introducing myself and sticking around at events.’
It was always Faris’s plan to study abroad and his Hamburg classes transfer back as credit for his studies at Drexel. For other engineering students, who wonder how it works with their curriculum, he has only words of encouragement: ‘Just do it. I believe the challenge and experience of immersing myself in a new country, with new people and different methodologies and ideas, is essential for my growth as a student and later as a professional. It can be that for you too.’

The men's football World Cup starts today, so here are some tips for open air viewing where you can experience Germans in a way you might never have seen before: 😉 In a frenzy of joy or in the depth of depression should the German team leave after the group phase again. 😅
And with a "throwback Thursday" post to better times in summer semester 2014 when Germany was the world champion 🏆Some of our international exchange students got into the party feeling at open air events. We see you Lucy, Laura, Eirini, Lexi, Elisha, Connor, Rachel, Carissa, Merve, et. al. 🙂🎉Can you believe it is 12 years!!!
So, where can you watch this year? Here are some ideas:
- Spielbudenplatz St. Pauli
- Landhauswalter Stadtpark
- Lattenplatz vor dem Knust (Neuer Kamp 30)
- Hobenköök, Oberhafen
- ÜberQuell Brewery near Fischmarkt
Or - if this lovely "summer weather" continues, get together with some friends in your student dorm and support your team. Good luck!

On Monday we had a lovely China Evening with our USST students to celebrate 40 years sister cities Hamburg - Shanghai. We were treated to short talks on Beijing, Shanghai and Sichuan, Tai Chi, music and songs. And then there was an opportunity to learn Chinese caligraphy and paper-cutting and try Chinese delicacies and tea. The evening was opened by the President of HAW Hamburg, Prof. Dr. Ute Lohrentz.
The University of Shanghai for Science & Technology (USST) students are studying in Hamburg this semester as part of their dual degree programme at the Shanghai-Hamburg College. We are very grateful for all the hard work they put in to this event and to Xin Ahlers of HAW Hamburg's International Office, who coordinates the Shanghai-Hamburg College programmes at HAW Hamburg.

Congratulations 🎉to everyone who was offered a place on our BSc Information Engineering programme in winter semester 2026/27! 🎉
👨🎓 We look forward to welcoming you in October and hope you don't have to wait too long for your visas. If you do, don't worry, it happens to a lot of people, so we are used to late arrivals. The main thing is to keep in contact with the programme coordinator: [email protected]
📌 Please ensure you send all the required documents within the deadline, so you don't lose your place. If you live outside of Germany and cannot get them to us by the deadline, it is possible to send them by eMail: [email protected]
😢To those of you who weren't offered a place, we are very sorry. We have so many applicants. Please do not take it personally and maybe try again next semester. Or maybe hope that not everyone accepts their place. There might be a second round of offers in three weeks time if places are not filled.
