What happens when opportunity meets purpose?

We are proud to celebrate Dr. Terence Kibula Lukong, a member of the first cohort of the ISA Program, who has completed his PhD in Engineering Sciences and Applications with the highest distinction at the National Advanced School of Engineering, Yaoundé.

Growing up in Cameroon, Terence developed a passion for understanding how science and innovation can address real challenges in society, particularly within the electricity sector.

His PhD research proposes a novel approach to electricity load forecasting, helping support more accurate planning of power grids, infrastructure expansion and regulatory decision-making.

For Terence, ISA became an important part of that journey.
“ISA was truly a turning point in my journey. It gave me the exposure, knowledge, and international collaboration opportunities I had long hoped for.”

And his message to the ISA community is one we want to remember:
“Never underestimate the power of opportunity. ISA opened doors for me that transformed a dreamfulfilmentity.”

This achievement is not only the fulfilment of a lifelong dream, but also the beginning of a greater responsibility: using science and engineering to contribute to the sustainable development of Cameroon, Africa and beyond.

Every big project starts with a first conversation. 🌱

Last week, we visited Alexander-von-Humboldt-Gymnasium in Hamburg-Harburg for the first introduction to Wälder ohne Grenzen.

Together with the students, we talked about what the project is about, why forests matter, and what we will explore together in the coming weeks.

This was just the beginning. 🌳
This week, we’re taking the next step.

From Hamburg to a PhD graduation in Japan 🎓

We’re very happy to celebrate Dr. Abel Abebe Ersulo, a former ISA Practical Research Fellow, who has successfully completed his PhD at Hokkaido University, Japan.

Dr. Abel spent nine months with us at the International Sustainability Academy in Hamburg. During that time, he worked on his research, developed his academic goals and prepared for the next step in his journey.

Years later, he wrote to us with a sentence that really stayed with us:
“ISA is part of this story.”
His PhD is, of course, the result of years of his own hard work, persistence and research. We’re simply proud that ISA could support one part of that journey.

Congratulations, Dr. Abel, and all the best for what comes next. 🌱

Wälder ohne Grenzen continues next week with students in Harburg! 🌳

Through forest exploration, filmmaking and creative workshops, young people will discover how their local forest connects to a bigger global story.
Together with SDW Hamburg, our ISA alumni network brings forest stories and perspectives from around the world into the classroom.

One idea can take you somewhere completely unexpected. 🌱

For Emily, a journey that began with tackling plastic waste in Vietnam has grown into something much bigger - entrepreneurship, ISA, international connections and now a PhD in Hamburg.

What connects all of it?

A curiosity about how we can build systems that are not only more sustainable, but also stronger and more resilient.
Her story is still evolving and this is just the next chapter.

That’s what Quality Education can look like.

Through Wälder ohne Grenzen (Forests Without Borders), young people in Hamburg explore forests not only from a local perspective, but also through experiences and knowledge from Brazil, Cameroon and Indonesia.

Together with SDW Hamburg and the ISA, learning goes beyond facts.

When crisis hits, inequality hits harder. 🌍

Not everyone has the same resources, protection or opportunities to recover from conflict, displacement or disaster.

And the people trying to help are increasingly at risk too.

This WorldHumanitarianDay, we’re looking at humanitarian action through the lens of SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities.

In 2026 alone, OCHA reports:
82 aid workers killed
97 injured
39 kidnapped

Behind every number is someone who chose to help people in crisis.

Protecting humanitarian workers.
Protecting civilians.
Making aid accessible to everyone who needs it.

These are also part of building a more equal world.

Global health is getting better.

So why are 13.5 million children still missing every routine vaccine in their first year of life?

That is the reality behind SDG 3: Good Health & Well-Being.

We have seen huge progress in maternal health, child survival, and HIV prevention.

But progress is slowing.

Malaria is rising again.
Healthcare is still unaffordable for millions.
Vaccination gaps are leaving communities vulnerable to preventable outbreaks.

Good health is not just about surviving illness.

It is about having access to care, prevention, vaccines, information, and a health system that works when you need it.
