Congratulations to Prof. Dr. Kathleen Hermans! 🎉

Since September 1, 2026, Prof. Dr. Kathleen Hermans has held the joint professorship in Global Change, Land Use, and Migration at and the Institute of Geosciences and Geography at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg ( ). The appointment was made under the Leibniz Programme for Women Professors.

Prof. Dr. Kathleen Hermans has been with IAMO since 2022 and conducts research on the interactions between environmental change, land use, rural livelihoods, and human mobility, with a regional focus on Central Asia.
With her new professorship, she is launching the “TransMoP” project, which investigates in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan how land degradation and climate change, among other factors, lead some people to choose migration while others remain in their home regions.

📆Online Workshop: Science Communication for Social Media

How can researchers communicate their work effectively on Instagram and TikTok?

This online workshop introduces researchers to the basics of science communication on social media. Participants will explore how platforms such as Instagram and TikTok work, learn about different content formats and workflows, and develop practical skills in storytelling, scripting, and creating engaging short-form videos.

The workshop is aimed at researchers from all disciplines. No prior experience with Instagram, TikTok, or science communication is required. The workshop will be held in English.

The workshop will be led by Franziska Eckardt and Leonie Beyerlein, journalists and social media experts at the Leibniz Lab “Umbrüche und Transformationen”. The Leibniz Lab is a knowledge-transfer initiative of the Leibniz Association that develops and tests new approaches to science communication. Across TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, Franziska and Leonie translate research findings into accessible and engaging content for broader audiences.

As part of the funded project, researcher Antje Jantsch conducted a research stay in at the Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington and Motu Economic and Public Policy Research.

The visit focused on how local living conditions, place attachment, and environmental changes shape people's decisions to stay or leave. During a research seminar in , she presented joint findings on climate change and intentions in rural Southeast Europe, highlighting that migration decisions are deeply rooted in social and spatial contexts rather than being purely economic. The valuable exchanges with leading experts including Prof. Philip Morrison, Prof. Arthur Grimes, Prof. Jacques P**t, and Dr. Dan Weijers strengthened international networks and laid the foundation for future collaborations on well-being and regional development.

As part of the funded project, , together with its international partners, is organizing the summer school “Geospatial Information for Wildfire Monitoring and Risk Assessment” in , North Macedonia, from September 6 to 12, 2026.

The summer school provides hands-on training in the use of geodata and satellite-based remote sensing for the monitoring and risk assessment of wildfires. It is aimed in particular at students, early-career researchers, and professionals from government and civil society institutions in the agriculture and forestry sectors in the Western Balkans.
