Word of the week: Advent calendar
Advent calendars in England have 25 days. This is because Christmas is celebrated on 25 December not, as in other areas of Europe, celebrated on Christmas Eve.
While we are at it: Christmas Day, Christmas Eve, New Year etc. are all proper nouns and are capitalised.

Word of the week: Chef!

Another false friend this week, and also (indirectly) to do with food again. The boss!

But beware when telling me about an argument with your CHEF (that would mean you employ a professional cook) or with your CHIEF (suggesting a native american background).

Chef = Boss: I'm going to ask my boss for a raise!
Koch = Chef: The new restaurant is great, they have an excellent chef.

Mince Pies

It's Christmas time soon and time to start your Christmas baking. One of the seasonal favourites are "mince pies".

Mince pies are little pies made of mincemeat - but this kind of mincemeat contains neither meat nor mints.

Christmas mincemeat is made of dried fruit (sultanas, currants, raisins), apples, brandy and shredded suet, as well as lots of Chrismas spices.

Most people buy it ready-made in jars if they are making their own mince pies, but you can also make your own mincemeat. Here's a recipe from the BBC.

False freind: "Rezept / recipe"

When you are talking about picking up medicine from a chemist, don't try to use "recipe". A recipe is the list of instructions needed for cooking or baking. The word you are looking for is "presctiption":

I'm just off to the chemist to collect my prescription.
Your cake is delicious, can you give me the recipe please.

Rezept = prescription
Recipe = Kochrezept.

Word of the Week

Used to / Didn't use to

When talking about the olden days or past habits, English learners often try a whole range of past tense phrases - often starting with "In former times..." .
However a correct sentence would use "Used to" or "Didn't use to" followed by the infinitive:
We used to get free milk at school.
I didn't used to like vegetables
Did you use to practice piano much?
See - easy!

Bonfire Night

Is celebrated on 5 November every year in the UK. On this day in 1606 Guy Fawkes was caught with large amounts of gunpowder under Westminster Palace. He and his accomplices had intended to blow up the palace, killing the protestant King James 1 and restoring a Catholic monarch to the throne.

Today large bonfires are set alight on local fields and playing areas around the country on the evening of 5 November. Locals usually start building these bonfires weeks in advance using old furniture and unwanted wood. A large effigy of Guy Fawkes is placed on top of the fire and the crowd cheers when it catches light. Fireworks are lit and kids hold sparklers.

Pigeonhole

As from today there will be a weekly "Word of the Week" posted here. I get asked so many questions, so I thought I'd start collecting all the answers here. If there's anything in English you've ever wondered about or don't understand, just send me the question and I'll post an explanation here.

The first Word of the Week is "pigeonhole". A student of mine couldn't understand what pigeonhole had to do with office life.
"I'll print out the mail and leave it in your pigeonhole".
Pigeonhole has two meanings - the first is obviously, a home for pigeons. The second is the name for the internal postboxes used in offices, schools or even hotels.

Any bets on the names? Definitely an Elizabeth and Diana in there somewhere.
