German Passive Voice — simplified. 🇩🇪

The passive focuses on what happens, rather than who does the action.

1. Präsens
wird + Partizip II
→ Die Tür wird geöffnet.

2. Präteritum
wurde + Partizip II
→ Der Brief wurde geschrieben.

3. Perfekt
sein + Partizip II + worden
→ Das Auto ist repariert worden.

4. Plusquamperfekt
war + Partizip II + worden
→ Das Essen war vorbereitet worden.

With a modal verb, the structure changes:

Präsens: kann + Partizip II + werden
→ Die Aufgabe kann gelöst werden.

Präteritum: konnte + Partizip II + werden
→ Das Problem konnte gelöst werden.

And in Perfekt and Plusquamperfekt, we use the double infinitive:

→ Die Maschine hat repariert werden können.
→ Die Straße hatte gesperrt werden können.

The key is not to memorize eight separate sentences. Understand the pattern, and German grammar becomes much more manageable.
