In her new book, published by Oxford University Press, Dr Tainá Garcia Maia examines more than 300 judicial decisions from the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.

Recap: FAU CHREN hosted Professor Harry Van Buren for a one-day workshop with PhDs, postdocs, and faculty on the interdisciplinary nature of Business and Human Rights (BHR).

💡Rather than presenting fixed conclusions, Van Buren structured the day around a set of questions for participants to work through together. Where does BHR currently stand, and what problems should it be trying to solve? What actually counts as a discipline, and is BHR itself one, or a field that draws on several? Does the distinction between multi, inter, and transdisciplinary research matter in practice, or is it a distinction without a difference?

💡Discussion touched on what BHR has achieved, including the UN Guiding Principles, France’s duty of vigilance law, and modern slavery acts, alongside where progress has stalled, such as cosmetic due diligence, tokenised rightsholders, and limited access to remedy. Van Buren used the largely separate tracks of legal and management scholarship in BHR to make the questions concrete.

💡In an afternoon ideation exercise, small groups defined a BHR problem, identified two relevant disciplinary lenses, explained why each on its own would be insufficient, and sketched what an interdisciplinary research strategy might look like. The day closed with an open discussion of the practical challenges of interdisciplinary work, including siloed departments, disciplinary jargon, what counts in a discipline for evaluation, and writing for and finding reviewers from specific fields.

A group of students from different Eastern European countries and diverse academic disciplines travelled to FAU for a Summer School titled “Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Human Rights”.

FAU CHREN and the Cluster of Excellence “Transforming Human Rights” happily contributed several classes and got to discuss a broad set of human rights questions with the international group.

Postdoc Dr Eline Waerp has recently completed a Visiting Fellowship at the Center for Advanced Internet Studies (), where she spent three months exploring the societal impacts of digital technologies alongside researchers from a wide range of disciplines.

The fellowship complemented Eline’s research at FAU CHREN on the digitalisation of EU air border control and provided valuable interdisciplinary perspectives on digital transformation and its implications for society.

Reflecting on her experience, she describes the fellowship as an opportunity to broaden her perspective on both the opportunities and challenges of digitalisation: "The fellowship has opened my eyes to the many different ways in which the digital impacts our daily lives, and both benefits and risks with that."

Eline's biggest takeaway: "AI is developing so rapidly that it is important for the public, scholars, and regulators to not fall behind if we want systems that benefit everyone and not just the tech companies." 🤖
