In our latest Brown Bag Lunch, we spoke with Özlem Zıngıl Kök about her research on Business, Human Rights and State Duty to Protect in Competitive Authoritarian Regimes.

Özlems key findings:
🔹 Competitive authoritarian regimes create new governance gaps. Unlike the governance gaps addressed by the UNGPs, these are not simply caused by weak or absent regulation.
🔹 States can actively enable corporate-related human rights harm. In competitive authoritarian regimes, politically connected businesses can become beneficiaries and drivers of authoritarian consolidation.
🔹 The issue is not only state failure, but state complicity. This requires a stronger focus on the state’s duty to protect human rights.
🔹 Business and human rights research needs to look beyond corporate responsibility. International legal compliance, implementation and enforcement are equally crucial.

🏆𝗙𝗔𝗨 𝗥𝘂𝗱𝗼𝗹𝗳 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱
On 28 September 2026, will honour Venezuelan sociologist and human rights activist Ligia Bolívar with the FAU Rudolf Benario Human Rights Award in recognition of her outstanding global contributions to the advancement of human rights. In particular, the award honours her work on behalf of migrants and refugees, as well as her efforts to document human rights violations in Venezuela.

🎙️ Transnationale Repression: Wenn Staaten ihre Kritiker im Ausland verfolgen

Eine aktuelle Sendung des Deutschlandfunks widmet sich dem Thema transnationale Repression und beleuchtet verschiedene Perspektiven auf die zunehmenden Herausforderungen für Betroffene.

Auch Fabian Krause trägt mit einem Beitrag zur Sendung bei und greift dabei Erkenntnisse aus dem Projekt „Mapping Transnational Repression in Germany – a Human Rights Perspective“ auf.

Das Projekt entstand im Rahmen der FAU CHREN Human Rights Clinic in Kooperation mit dem Deutschen Institut für Menschenrechte. Ein studentisches Team unter Leitung von FK untersuchte die Bedrohungen durch transnationale Repression in Deutschland und bestehende Schutzlücken.

🎙️ Transnational repression: When states pursue critics abroad

A recent Deutschlandfunk programme explores transnational repression and the growing challenges faced by people targeted across borders.
Research Associate Fabian Krause contributes to the programme, drawing on findings from the project “Mapping Transnational Repression in Germany – a Human Rights Perspective.”

The project was conducted as part of the FAU CHREN Human Rights Clinic in cooperation with the German Institute for Human Rights. A student team led by Fabian Krause examined the threats faced by people affected by transnational repression in Germany and gaps in existing protection.

How a summer school can make you realize that you might have to adapt your research project – or that you have more in common with other researchers than you think.

A few weeks ago, we shared a post about a Methods Lab organized by “Transforming Human Rights” in collaboration with the Institute of Human Rights at .

Today, we are happy to give you some more insights about what participants enjoyed the most, what they learnt and how they use their newly acquired knowledge in their own projects.

“For a good methodological reflection, you need to explain what you do – and that’s actually challenging when you talk to somebody from another discipline, but that challenge is productive because…”
“The discussions today helped me realize that one of the core methodological challenges I face is actually also an existential question about the type of project I wish to pursue.”

In our latest Brown Bag Lunch episode we talked with Milena Störmer about her joint study on Human Rights Governance in Post-Conflict Syria with Rim Bitar:

What happens to human rights governance when the institutional and stakeholder foundations it depends on are largely absent or misaligned?
In this work-in-progress study, Milena and Rim examine human rights governance and stakeholder engagement in post-conflict “buffer conditions”, using Syria as an empirical context.

Based on interviews with Syrian civil society organisations, scholars and actors connected to Syrian businesses, the study explores how concepts such as human rights, rightsholders, corporate responsibility and stakeholder engagement are understood and negotiated under conditions of political, social and institutional transformation.

The research contributes to broader debates on the applicability and limitations of human rights due diligence (HRDD) and related governance mechanisms in conflict-affected and high-risk areas (CAHRAs).

📖 New publication: Judging Poverty and Inequality in Brazil 📚
How do courts engage with poverty and inequality and what role can judicial decisions play in addressing deeply rooted social inequalities?

In her new book, published by Oxford University Press, Dr Tainá Garcia Maia examines more than 300 judicial decisions from the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.

In our interview, Tainá also shares insights into the book, its relevance to current debates on poverty and inequality, and the process behind the research.
