From single PFAS molecules to microplastics - magnetic nanoparticles for cleaner water! 🌊
How can persistent pollutants be removed from water more effectively?
Researchers led by Prof. Dr. Marcus Halik at the Chair of Polymer Materials at FAU, together with colleagues from Uniklinikum Erlangen and the Bavarian Health and Food Safety Authority (LGL), have developed functionalized magnetic nanoparticles that efficiently remove forever chemicals (PFAS) from water. 🧲
The team from Prof. Halik, including Johannes Voß and Linda Rockmann, showed that the technology works not only for individual PFAS molecules but also for fluorine-containing microplastics.
Once the pollutants bind to the iron oxide nanoparticles, they can simply be removed using a magnet. The particles are non-toxic, scalable and can even be reused, depending on their functionalization.
The researchers also tested the method under real-world conditions.
They successfully reduced PFAS concentrations in contaminated drinking water below the new German limit and removed fluorine-containing microplastics from river water and wastewater.
This innovative approach could help make water treatment more effective and sustainable. 🌱
We look forward to seeing the impact of this promising research!

Spitzenleistung made at FAU: Das Team „FAUltier“ gewinnt die weltweit größte Studierenden-Supercomputer-Challenge! 💻🏆
Herzlichen Glückwunsch an Lorenz Löwe, Anton Wiede, Malte Fischer, Frederik Janssen, Adrian Lachmann und ihre Betreuerin Melanie Heckel zu dieser herausragenden Leistung! 🎊

Game-changer for organic solar cell research unlocked! 🔐
Electrons are the key to understanding the inner workings of these innovative materials.
Our researchers at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg, in collaboration with Forschungszentrum Jülich and DESY, have made a groundbreaking discovery: Using three-dimensional electron diffraction (3D ED), electrons can provide both local and averaged structural information, revolutionizing the field of organic solar cells.💡
With careful dose management, structural information can be unlocked without damaging the delicate molecular order.
This breakthrough opens up new possibilities for the development of efficient and sustainable energy systems. This method is complementary to existing techniques with X-Ray.
The work has been published in the renowned journal Nature Communications. Check it out now!

Empowering people with disabilities! 🦾
We're thrilled to announce that the project "GraspAgain" at Department of Artificial Intelligence in Biomedical Engineering (AIBE) and the Department of Mechanical Engineering has received funding over 960,000 euros from the Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR). 🌟
As you may recall the project is a groundbreaking initiative that combines cutting-edge research and technology to create a wearable device that can detect and interpret hand movements.
This device will allow people with disabilities to perform everyday tasks with ease, such as grasping and manipulating objects, and even communicate with others.
We're proud to have been a part of the journey so far and look forward to seeing the positive impact this project will have on the lives of those who need it most. 💫
