The MA program in Religious Studies provides the opportunity to study the plurality of religious traditions in Europe in past and present. The program combines methodological tools from History, Religious Studies and Cultural Studies to analyze the role of religion in Europe's complex and pluralistic societies, as well as their global entanglements from a postcolonial perspective. It is possible t

PROPERTY, APPROPRIATION, AND THE ECONOMY OF RELIGION (II): QUESTIONING APPROPRIATION MECHANISMS, INTRODUCING HIEROTROPIA This second lecture further examines divine property through the ways in which gods‘ dwellings and the attribution of space to them were reshaped through human intervention. Transformations of religious spaces in antiquity do not consistently align with modern models of substitution, extraction, or appropriation. While these terms can be analytically useful, they partly conflict with evidence for cohabitation and historical shifts in the dedication of sacred spaces. This creates a conceptual difficulty in accounting for the dynamics underlying changing regimes of divine property, which range from complete functional replacement to the introduction of new divine agents, or the reorganisation of divine hierarchy without the erasure of previous ‚owners‘. The latter reflects mechanisms of religious change that are not fully captured by existing categories. To address this, I propose the concept of hierotropia, a heuristic tool for analysing shifts in the divine hierarchy of a place that helps nuance the distinctions between religious memory, cultic coexistence, and the rearticulation of worship without necessitating total rupture.

PROPERTY, APPROPRIATION, AND THE ECONOMY OF RELIGION (I): QUESTIONING DIVINE PROPERTY AND ITS LIMITS
This first lecture interrogates the limits of divine property by focusing on religious initiatives undertaken on private ground. The evidence suggests that ritual installations within houses cannot be automatically classified as domestic cult, thereby challenging the assumption that a private location necessarily implies household religion. Building on this observation, I reconsider the operative meaning of sacer and the analytical usefulness of categories that presuppose clearly delimited sacred areas, including the supposedly well-defined lucus. Such cases indicate that sacrality was neither spatially
self-contained nor conceptually uniform, but depended upon recognition, use, and context. If sacred status was contingent rather than absolute, then the distinction between
‚within and outside religious space becomes historically variable. Divine property thus appears not as a fixed juridical condition or an absolute religious construct, but as a relational and negotiable configuration, shaped by practices of marking, claiming, and managing space within specific social and material environments.

SHIA RITUALS IN ITALY: TRENDS OF CONTINUITY AND CHANGE

This presentation is based on a multi-year study of the changing ritual life of Twelver Shia Muslims in Italy by focusing on how commemorative practices, observed in memory of Imam Husayn’s martyrdom in Karbala, are transformed within a diasporic context marked by legal constraints, social marginality, and plural religious publics. Based on participant
observation and semi-structured interviews conducted between 2017 and 2021 in 13 Italian cities, the study
discusses how Pakistani, Iranian, Afghan, and Lebanese
Shia communities creatively adapt the rituals to new spatial, linguistic, and political environments. Beyond serving merely as acts of cultural and religious preservation, Shia rituals in Italy identify dynamic sites of negotiation in which visibility and belonging are continually undergoing change. The notion of pragmatic adaptation provides an account of these transformations and of the ways in which ritual practices are
selectively reencoded by various communities to address public suspicion, intra-Shia diversity, and the absence of institutional recognition within the Italian urban context.
Particular attention is also given to shifts public ritual
expression, the reconfiguration of gendered roles, and the attenuation of political and religious hierarchies under diasporic conditions.
