Back at Hannover Airport. All the fun that began in early June is over. All GAPPies with a thick gappover. Gappover (similar to a hangover) is the mixture of feelings and states of mind you find yourself in at the end of GAPP: sad, tired, relieved, exhausted, happy, grateful, filled with precious memories and experiences that remain once the jet lag has been overcome. It includes the awareness that this time is irretrievably gone. That the (school) everyday life quickly catches up with you again. A hot shower at home can only cure it in the short term. In the long run, the only thing that helps is to tell about the adventures, to share the photos, to keep in touch with all the GAPPies for as long as possible, to value the experiences you have gathered and to continue to live the GAPP spirit. And no matter how hard the Gappover is, it is the result of a once-in-a-lifetime-experience.
Bad news: GAPP 2023 is over - good news: GAPP 2025 is about to start (hopefully)!

Today is the last day of our trip. Tomorrow we are going back to good old Germany. We used to fly out from San Francisco, but this time we changed our tour to Washington D.C. Personally, as an enthusiast of history and politics it was certainly the highlight after our stay in Ogden - especially the tour of the Capitol was a highlight. The GAPPies were a little less enthusiastic… We also found the German American Friendship Garden. Talking about friendship, JD (a GAPPie who moved to North Carolina shortly after the visit in Germany and thus couldn‘t host Felix) came all the way to Washington D.C. to meet us and to spent half a day with us. That‘s the GAPP spirit!

My first and last time in Washington D.C. was 30 years ago when I did a student exchange as a student myself. Or partnerschool was the Graham High School in St. Paris, Ohio. It was such a impressive thing and I still have so many good memories connected to this exchange. And it was definitely crucial for my decision to take on GAPP at Goetheschule as I wanted other young people to gain the same unique experiences. A picture from ‚Hauswirtschaft‘. Me between Ms. Campbell and my buddy Jörg 😊.

Next stop: Sin City- personally, I can’t get much out of this city, but the GAPPies loved it and would have spent more days here in Las Vegas.

Second day was Monument Valley. On our way we came across people pretending to be Forrest Gump. Later we strolled along Grand Canyon South Rim - amazing as always.

Some days ago we left our friends in Utah to go on our round trip. After a wonderful farewell party we left in tears (and in rain). A big ‘Danke‘ goes to the BHS drumline for the salute and to principal Rich Murray for his great words at the farewell party. Gary, Denae, Jeff - it was great to see you again. Caroly, Keith, Kevin: we are looking forward to seeing you again in Einbeck with another bunch of great Gappies!

Our students spent the official German American Day at TH Bell Junior High talking about the same things our presidents did: the many things we share and value together. GAPP means having a lot of German American Days building long lasting friendships. Again, a big “Thank you“ to all the people making it possible.
