There are now almost 3,000 people enhancing their academic qualifications at Dresden International University. With constantly increasing numbers of students, the DIU is demonstrating that 12 years after it was established the close connection between professional practice and customised, interdisciplinary and academically e

xcellent continuing education is a successful model. The carefully developed courses of study at DIU produce specialists – highly acclaimed specialists who are urgently needed in business and society. By studying for bachelor’s and master’s degrees, they acquire expert knowledge and personal skills that they can put to good use in the health service, in legal practice, the cultural and social sciences, the natural and engineering sciences, and management. The courses bring together knowledge and experience from many specialist disciplines, since an interdisciplinary approach is one of the fundamental principles at DIU. As a network university, it can select from a large circle of experienced lecturers to find the most suitable individuals for each particular course. This distinctly sets it apart from many other providers in the field of academic continuing education. It is not only the number of participants that has continuously grown; new courses of study are being introduced every year. The great demand shows how well the continuing-education university of TU Dresden has succeeded in understanding the market, recognising new educational needs earlier than other institutions, and responding to them with innovative courses. The DIU itself measures its success, above all, through the success of its participants: good and excellent results are not unusual, and some graduates even go home with distinctions for their master’s dissertations. And many gladly return a few years later to study something new – that alone speaks for itself. DIU’s status as the continuing-education university of TU Dresden also involves an important commitment: our students receive academic training and continuing education at the level of an elite university. I am very proud that what started out as an idea has resulted in this flourishing model. It is a successful response to people’s growing need for sound academic training and continuing education. Interdisciplinary, scientific, international and highly experienced – these are the qualities embodied by Dresden International University.
