This Saturday, 3 October, marks German Unity Day, the anniversary of East and West Germany becoming one country again in 1990. It's Germany's national holiday, and one of the dates most woven into the country's modern history.

A practical note alongside it: because this year the holiday lands on a Saturday, the shop closures kick in too. Supermarkets and most stores won't be open, so plan your grocery run for Friday instead.

Wednesday, 30 September marks the nationwide Action Day Against Gambling Addiction, and support services across Hessen are using the day to raise awareness of the risks of gambling.

If gambling is affecting you or someone you know, free and confidential help is available:

Most of you are already covered for public transport in Darmstadt and beyond. Your Semester Ticket comes as part of your semester fee, but it does not activate itself.

Once you switch it on, it covers local buses, trams, and regional trains, so getting around the city or heading out for a weekend trip becomes a lot easier on your budget.

A few exceptions to keep in mind: long-distance trains (ICE/IC) outside the Deutschlandticket network and the AirLiner bus to Frankfurt Airport aren't included.

Important: once you access the activation page, your right to withdraw and claim a refund of the semester fee portion for the ticket is automatically forfeited. Only activate it if you're sure you want to keep it for the semester.

Swipe through to see exactly how to activate it before your semester starts!
