🔎 Language is also a key to history

Karol Kobus, a graduate of the renowned bilingual I LO Dwujęzyczne im. Mikołaja Kopernika w Kołobrzegu in Kolberg (Poland) and a history student in Gdańsk, spent the September days on a one-month scholarship at IIK Deutschland in Düsseldorf and the surrounding area. The scholarship is awarded annually to students or graduates of “Kopernikus” thanks to the friendly cooperation with the high school, which already maintains diverse ties with Germany, for example in the field of student exchange.

Welcomed by Dr. Matthias Jung (Managing Director at IIK Deutschland), Dr. Lilia Monika Hirsch (Association Member at IIK Deutschland), and Michael Witte (Head of “Accommodation”), Karol embarked on a journey into the unknown: German lessons at IIK Deutschland in the mornings, cultural and historical explorations in North Rhine-Westphalia in the afternoons. From Düsseldorf’s “KÖ” and Old Town to Oberkassel, Medienhafen, Benrath, and Kaiserswerth, all the way to the nature reserves in Himmelgeist and Urdenbach – Karol was able to discover Düsseldorf from its most beautiful sides. Cologne, Bonn, and Aachen were also on the program. A bike tour to Heinrich Heine University, the founding site of IIK Deutschland, was naturally part of the historical exploration.

With all this variety, one rule applies: speaking German is a must – in emergencies, English can help too. Above all, what helps are people who not only provide accommodation for learners at IIK Deutschland but, as host families, enable genuine encounters and relationships through personal time and communication.

Whether individually or as part of the leisure program at IIK Deutschland – learning German and going on excursions also means getting to know the culture of our country. Thanks to the international composition of the courses, this becomes a shared and exciting experience.

💬 Karol Kobus says:
“The course allows for complete immersion in the language, which significantly accelerates the learning process. [...] I had the pleasure of meeting many friendly young people from all parts of the world and learning with them, which allowed me to view the global world from many perspectives. During my studies at IIK, I had the opportunity, under the patronage of the dear Dr. Lilia Hirsch and the reliable Mr. Michael Witte, to visit the wonderful city of Düsseldorf.”

Our thanks go to Principal Dr. Artur Dzierkowski and Boarding School Director Mgr. Jerzy Lipski (Scholarship Coordinator) for their commitment to bringing Poland and Germany closer together not only linguistically but also culturally – and for inviting us to the festivities celebrating the 80th anniversary of “Kopernikus” in October 2025. We also learn from this – and look forward to welcoming the next scholarship holder who will visit IIK Deutschland in 2026.
