We are delighted to announce a new international workshop organized within the framework of ItaPhen Research Group on Italian Phenomenology and in collaboration with the Husserl Archives Cologne and the Bergische Universität Wuppertal:

THE LIMITS OF CRITIQUE: PHENOMENOLOGY AND IDEOLOGY

What can phenomenology contribute to the critique of ideology? Can phenomenological analysis help us understand the ways in which ideology shapes experience, perception, and social reality? And where are the limits of phenomenological critique itself?

Over two days, scholars from different countries and philosophical traditions will address these questions through seven panels devoted to gender ideology, social imaginaries, reification, political belonging, political phenomenology, Husserlian ideology critique, and the historical relationship between phenomenology and ideology.

The workshop forms part of the activities of the DFG-funded ItaPhän project, which investigates the history and development of phenomenology in Italy while opening up broader questions concerning the critical, political, and social potential of the phenomenological tradition.

We were delighted to welcome Dr. Tymoteusz Mietelski (Catholic Academy in Warsaw) last Friday for the first event of our Italian Phenomenology Today 2026 lecture series at the Husserl Archive in Cologne.

In his talk, “Paolo Valori: The Phenomenological Analysis of Moral Experience,” Dr. Mietelski offered a rich and insightful reconstruction of Paolo Valori’s contribution to moral phenomenology. The lecture highlighted the originality of Valori’s analyses of moral experience and demonstrated their continued relevance for contemporary debates in moral phenomenology.

The presentation sparked a lively discussion, revealing numerous points of contact between Valori’s thought and current philosophical approaches to ethics, normativity, and lived moral experience. It was a wonderful opportunity to rediscover an important figure of Italian phenomenology and to reflect on the enduring significance of phenomenological approaches to morality. A special highlight of the afternoon was the opportunity to see several original editions of Valori’s works, which Dr. Mietelski generously brought with him.
