Retrospective James Rosenquist: Painted Imersion
Dear Arttalkers,
What an exciting show that Museum Ludwig has put together! It recreates the amazing 60s in word and pictures and celebrates the iconic images of James Rosenquist.
“ History is remembered by its art, not by its war machines”“— James Rosenquist
Premier in Museum Ludwig! For the first time ever, the amazing large scale works of James Rosenquist (1933 – 2017) will be displayed in this superlative retrospective. This American Pop Artist is famous or his colorful, consumer imagery and billboard -size meter long panels. The show highlights not only the Rosenquist’s artwork but presents documents and other sources that sparked his interest and reveal the cultural, social and political dimensions of the 60s and 70s. In addition to a major work borrowed from the MoMA collection, the exhibition will re-create for the first time all three installations that Rosenquist build for the legendary New York Leo Castelli Gallery.
Come and join us! Let yourself be inspired by the new show “Painting as Immersion” - here a quote by the artist: “If you are close to it, a big painting is just a feeling around you, that's all."
Artful wishes, Karla

ArtTalk X-mas Special: Discover the Innovative Charisma of the Impressionists!
Innovation is a huge buzzword today. What are the connections between innovation and art? How do visual artists push boundaries? Why were the Impressionists in their day considered to be such innovative rebels – and today they seem so tame and beautiful?
We’ll consider these and other questions in the special exhibition, “From Dürer to Van Gogh” in the Wallraf-Richartz Museum. Here masterpieces of the collection are placed vis á vis highlights of the outstanding Swiss collection of E.G. Bührle.
We’ll discover the astounding originality in works by Degas, Monet, Sisley and Cezanne. Be amazed by the innovative pairing of the cubist painting “The Violinist” by George Braque with a panel by Albrecht Dürer and much more.

Who wouldn’t want to look glamorous at least once? Before Hollywood got so glittery, the Berlin photographer Karl Schenker, was glamming up famous women and men who came in droves to his studio on the Kurfürstendamm. As the “guru” for retouching, he created a certain look and made his society patrons (as well as favorite pets and female wax models!) look fabulous in high quality black and white images. This was in the 1920s, when the alluring power of commercial cosmetics and facial operations had just begun to exert their powerful fascination.
Schenker was a Jew who fled Europe, a commercial photographer with artistic ambitions and a man with a dark secret. The curator, Miriam Halwani presents ground-breaking research on this little known master after the museum acquired 100 of his photographs. A brief account of the genesis of photography and a fast forward to today’s ideal avatars will round off this talk on beauty and art deco photography.

Creativity has many faces. We were creative as children. We loved to draw and did often. Then around 2. grade something happened and we started getting self-conscious. Our creativity was subsumed to having the right answers. And it continued that way ever since.
People now realize that everyone can revitalize their creativity. We use it all the time to solve problems, see different perspectives and feel more confident about trying new things. Creative minds are open (and messy!) and want to shape the world around them. Enabling your confident creativity lets you make the most of your experiences and be prepared to learn from mistakes as part of the process. But what about artists? Visual and preforming artists whose self-expression and probing minds create works of art that make us – stop! And rethink who we are and what we stand for? Those radical creatives who challenge the status quo and, at the same time, our blind-spots.

The next ArtTalk on June 2 is on the multi-talented Fernand Leger! Living Art in Museum Ludwig Cologne!
The show Fernand Léger: Painting in Space highlights the quest of the artist to move painting off of the canvas into our lives and homes. He utilizes the impact of color, form and function to spur us forward, to make our lives change for the better. According to Léger, “let’s bring in color, it is as necessary as water and fire.”
Amazing how Léger’s experiments with large-scale architectural murals, rarely seen before in public, shape the space around them with energy and verve. Museum Ludwig’s international retrospective of one of the more influential modernists of our time, is a special show in a series of exhibitions to honor the Museum’s 40th anniversary. With over 170 works, including superb early films, fragile graphic work and theater costume designs, we’ll encounter a Fernand Léger who moves way beyond the silo of the tubular, cubist-like painted imagery he is known for, to an artist who strives for nothing less than the synthesis of the arts.
