Early hours of April 30, 1994. A public phone box at the corner of Dames Road and Clinton Road in Forest Gate, east London.
Joe Campbell went in to call his family in Guyana. As he got closer he thought he was looking at litter. Chip paper. Then he saw a baby. Hours old. Umbilical cord still attached.
He called 999 and stayed until police and an ambulance came. Hospital staff named her April, after the month they found her.
He asked if he could adopt her. He was told no. He was not married. He asked if he could stay in touch. He was told no. He later said he sent cards and presents that never reached her. He did not forget her.
She grew up in care, then with an adoptive family. In 2016, at 22, she put out an appeal for the man who had found her. Campbell saw it and came forward. They met that summer.
In the 2016 reports she was named Kiran Sheikh. In the 2026 interviews she is April Paul. Same night. Same phone box. Same man.
A decade after that reunion she says they see each other nearly every week. She stays at his house. She calls his children her siblings. She calls him complete family, and an angel.
She also met her birth mother once in 2016. That contact did not last. She says she may never get the answer she wanted, and she has stopped chasing it.
The box is gone. The night is not. A man stopped because the paper on the floor was not paper. ๐จ๐ฉ
