The Step Pyramids of the Canary Islands – Older Than We Thought?
New research findings are raising fascinating questions about the early history of the Canary Islands. At a transdisciplinary conference hosted by the Museum of Nature and Archaeology (MUNA) in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, international scientists will present, for the first time, the results of new OSL dating studies conducted on Canarian step pyramids. These findings suggest that these sacred structures may be considerably older than previously believed. The dating results will be complemented by fascinating archaeoastronomical investigations, digital reconstructions, and the latest research on Canarian mummies.
Together, these discoveries have the potential to reshape our understanding of the age, function, and cultural significance of these enigmatic monuments. At the same time, surprising new evidence from mummy studies is opening fresh perspectives on the origins, trade connections, and knowledge of the early inhabitants of the archipelago.
Archaeologists, natural scientists, astronomers, and historians will explore one of the most intriguing questions of Atlantic prehistory: Who were the first settlers of the Canary Islands—and when did they reach this remote archipelago?
The conference is designed to be highly interactive. Participants are invited to ask questions, share ideas, and actively engage in the discussions.

Las Pirámides Escalonadas de las Islas Canarias – ¿Más Antiguas de lo que Pensábamos?
Nuevos resultados de investigación están planteando fascinantes preguntas sobre la historia más antigua de las Islas Canarias. En una conferencia transdisciplinaria organizada por el Museo de Naturaleza y Arqueología (MUNA) de Santa Cruz de Tenerife, científicos internacionales presentarán por primera vez los resultados de nuevas dataciones OSL realizadas en pirámides escalonadas canarias. Los datos sugieren que estas estructuras de carácter sagrado podrían ser considerablemente más antiguas de lo que se pensaba hasta ahora. Estas investigaciones se complementan con fascinantes estudios arqueoastronómicos, reconstrucciones digitales y los últimos avances en el estudio de las momias canarias.
En conjunto, estos descubrimientos tienen el potencial de ampliar significativamente nuestro conocimiento sobre la antigüedad, la función y el significado cultural de estos enigmáticos monumentos. Al mismo tiempo, sorprendentes hallazgos procedentes de las investigaciones sobre las momias están aportando nuevas perspectivas sobre el origen, los contactos comerciales y los conocimientos de los antiguos habitantes del archipiélago.
Arqueólogos, científicos naturales, astrónomos e historiadores debatirán una de las cuestiones más apasionantes de la prehistoria atlántica: ¿Quiénes fueron los primeros pobladores de las Islas Canarias y cuándo alcanzaron este remoto archipiélago?
La conferencia ha sido concebida como un encuentro abierto e interactivo. Los asistentes podrán formular preguntas, compartir ideas y participar activamente en los debates.

What if the history of step pyramids has been told completely wrong?
In the latest episode of my Horus Expansion Saga on ABORA TV (Nuoviso), I follow a provocative trail of evidence: Increasing indications suggest that ancient Mesopotamian traditions did not develop in isolation, but spread via Upper Egypt into the Mediterranean world. Together with Frank Stoner, we present—for the first time—a completely new theory about a Neolithic seafaring power.
And this is where it gets truly intriguing: At the same time, the same architectural code appears across vast regions—step pyramids. Coincidence? Or the expression of a shared system of knowledge we have yet to fully understand?
New insights, including research by British Minoan expert Peter Tompkins and former excavation director at Knossos, reveal striking parallels and support the idea of a far-reaching cultural network—possibly connected through cosmological knowledge and astronomical orientation.
Are we looking at an early form of “globalized” knowledge?

Sad Memories of ABORA I -
The Arson Attack in Auligk near Pegau, 2000
After its widely acclaimed appearance at the BOOT Düsseldorf in 2000, a new chapter seemed to begin for ABORA I. The reed boat—symbol of a bold research vision—was exhibited at the Düsseldorf Boat Show, tangible and close to the public. But just two weeks after its return, the unimaginable happened.
On a night that would change everything, ABORA I fell victim to an arson attack. The flames did not only destroy a vessel—they struck at a vision. Through former FDP leader Guido Westerwelle, we had just established our first contacts with major sponsors.
They were ready to support us. One sponsor even envisioned ABORA I being restored to open the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004…
Then came the devastating news: unknown perpetrators set fire to ABORA I – casting us back into the Stone Age. The damage reached into the millions. And in the wake of the negative headlines, no one was willing to collaborate with us anymore.
What began as a setback became a turning point.
From the ashes of ABORA I, something greater emerged:
an unbreakable determination to rediscover history—
and to continue the journey.

Our work on prehistoric seafaring and cultural dispersal has been focused for three years on tracing the origins of the step pyramid-building peoples in the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands.
Much has already been reported about our current OSL project, but it was only through our partnership with Prof. Peter Tompkins (University of Nottingham) that I gained a crucial "missing link," motivating me to finally share the full story with the public after three decades.
This is the "sea power of the Neolithic Age"—a previously little-known people from the "Valley of Two Rivers" (Greek: Mesopotamia)—who set out almost 6,000 years ago to spread their customs, architecture, and religion across the Nile Valley, the Levant, and presumably even to the edge of the Old World. This cultural entity appears under many names: Shemsu Hor, Naqade culture, Proto-Phoenicians, etc.

Stone Analyses and Material Provenance of the Pyramids of Güímar
Within the framework of our recent investigations of the step pyramids of Güímar, spectrometric analyses have enabled us to physically confirm, for the first time, an observation originally proposed in the early 1990s by Thor Heyerdahl and an American geologist from Güímar. This earlier hypothesis suggested that the southern pyramid structures—particularly Pyramid No. 5 and No. 6—were constructed using building material that does not originate from the immediate subsoil, but was instead transported from a quarry located approximately two kilometers away.
Our current measurements clearly demonstrate that the isotopic signature of the stones used in the southern step structures differs significantly from that of the local substrate. This provides, for the first time, a clear physical confirmation that the construction material was transported over a considerable distance.
A key component of this investigation was access to the shaft of Pyramid No. 4, where earlier scientific studies had opened a passage down to the original bedrock. The reference data obtained from the in situ geological substrate show an isotopic correspondence with the northern pyramid structures. This confirms that these constructions were built directly from local material, whereas the southern structures evidently relied on externally sourced resources.
The reassessment of the material provenance of the southern pyramids gains additional significance in light of our archaeoastronomical investigations. These indicate that the line of sight of Pyramid No. 5 is today obstructed by the Güímar volcano. Geological reconstructions confirm that this volcanic structure emerged only around 800 BC, positioning itself between the pyramid and the Cueva del Galdar. Prior to this event, a clear line of sight existed along this axis.
Against this background, the considerable effort involved in transporting building material over a distance of approximately two kilometers to the roughly 65,000 m² plateau appears particularly noteworthy. A minor shift in the construction position would have been sufficient to maintain a permanently unobstructed line of sight. The fact that this was not the case, and that non-local material was used instead, constitutes a strong indication that the construction of the pyramid dates to a period when the present-day topographical situation had not yet developed.
These findings therefore suggest that at least parts of the step pyramids of Güímar may be significantly older than previously assumed. In this context, it is of central importance to pursue further OSL dating of the step pyramids on Tenerife in the near future, in order to place these results within a precise chronological framework.

First Research Expedition to Tenerife –
A Crucial Step for our OSL Analysis
Our recent journey to the pyramids of Tenerife marks an important milestone in our research. The primary focus was the precise determination of natural radiation in order to reliably finalize our OSL dating results. For this purpose, Dr. Jorge Sánchez brought a portable gamma spectrometer—an essential tool to further refine the age calculations of the pyramids.
In addition to the already investigated sites of Santo Domingo and San Marcos, we were able, for the first time, to conduct measurements in the Pyramids of Güímar. The continued support of the park management and the access to the step structures are of invaluable importance to our work.
A particularly significant moment was our meeting with Prof. Carmen del Arco and the park management in Güímar. The presentation of our preliminary results attracted considerable attention—especially due to the unexpectedly high age of the pyramids. At this stage, we are deliberately refraining from publishing specific dates, as the final results can only be validated after a full calibration of the OSL signals with both the natural environmental radioactivity and the newly acquired gamma radiation data. However, this final step is now imminent.
Together with our archaeological partners, we are planning a public presentation of the final results in early July 2026 in the Canary Islands—a moment that could fundamentally change our understanding of these structures. We will keep you informed as soon as the time comes.
