Our goal is to tie geology and climbing together in a story across millennia on the island of Sardinia in the Mediterranean.

Update from cold northern Germany. Our last week on the island offered us some great surprises! One outcrop had folds within a fold, awesome views help illuminate different geological units, local building codes still make us scratch our heads, and we discovered one last awesome climbing spot at Capo Carbonara.

Update from southern Sardinia:
For the last week we have been working in the mountains flanking the Gulf of Orosei. We have driven along spectacular panorama roads and lived in the lovely small Italian village of Baunei that is perched on a mountain side. Stefan gains more confidence in outdoor climbing everyday and we had a four legged local guide show us a trail up to the top of Monte Albo. The last week on the island is approaching and we will move further south before making our way back to northern Germany.

Newsflash from the field: old Italian gentlemen can be nice and offer you free wine when you are looking lost while finding outcrops, the interior of the island reminds Pat of California, Lu Branu appears to be the most promising climbing yet seen on the island, and sometimes local architecture is the best outcrop of garnet-bearing mica schists.

Week 2 Update: We have moved across the island to the northeast. A few impressions from the last week: speed limits are apparently optional for locals especially for old men in 40 year old Fiat Pandas, mozzarella is bought in packs of three, wine comes in jugs of 5 liters, Swiss and Germans make up the majority of Sardinia’s tourist population in October (us included), it is hard to find nice overhang boulders in Valle della Luna because of all the hippies occupying the caves, and you get funny looks from the extremely tan local retirees when looking at amphibole-bearing migmatites in your boots on the beach.

Quick update from Sardinia. We are two days into the field work and CANNOT BELIEVE OUR EYES! There is so much geology going on in Sardinia. We had our first breakfast with freshly brewed coffee on a miocene reef, Stefan is working hard mapping faults and we use team members for scales to photograph the Variscan basement. Next update will come in a few days, stay tuned. Cheers!

Hi everyone!

Since we announced the official start, we thought that we should share some visual, trip-related content. The picture here shows you the bouldering locations (left), geological outcrops identified by literature research with the geological map of Sardinia (1:250,000; center), and the resulting geological locations we are going to visit (right).

Enjoy!

Hallo zusammen!

Hi everyone!

October 4th is the day we’re going to Sardinia, so save the date! To assure that all of you and many more have the chance to get some impressions of our trip, we were busy handing out flyers in Bremen today. We have met many people, who were interested in the project. We are super happy to get such a good response!

Therefore, we would like to thank the bouldering gyms Linie7 and Boulder Bas Bremen, the Unterwegs-DAV climbing center and the local outdoor shops Quo Vadis and Alles für Globetrotter for displaying our flyers!

We shared their respective pages on our page. If you want to give 110 % in one of the bouldering/climbing gyms, or if you want to get the right equipment for your next journey pay them a visit!

Cheers, GeoBouldering Sardinia
