Our school offers an excellent education in a nurturing, multicultural community. On the banks of the Rhine River, our school is centrally located in the leafy heart of Europe. We are an English-speaking International Baccalaureate school who deliver the three comprehensive programmes of this internationally-renown organization. Our students span the ages of three to 19 years, all of whom we inspire to develop into well-rounded global citizens. Students enjoy small class sizes, an experienced and hand-selected international teaching staff, a student body comprised of 75+ nationalities, and a broad and stimulating curricula that both empowers students to discover their passions and strengths, and teaches them not just what to learn, but how to learn. Our students and graduates show maturity beyond their years and are exceptional role models. A wide range of co-curricular activities support student growth at all grade levels and includes technology, theatre, music, sports and languages. Specialist school counselors support students through times of transition, for education on life matters and simply to talk to. The Library event Take 10 To Read was such a success with a couple of Grade 3 classes!

Students enjoyed meeting authors online and hearing them talk about reading in general and how they write. We also heard from an illustrator about their part in the process.

There were built in pauses for students to turn and chat about adventures they might have had to inspire stories, draw along with an illustrator, and discuss what they would need to make their own 'happy place'. Finally, they were given 10 minutes dedicated reading time: they could choose online books, audio or real books for this.

The students were really engaged and enthusiastic, they can't wait to find out if we helped break the Guinness World Record for people reading at the same time!

Students in Grades 4 and 5 learnt how to create an avatar face for their library notebooks. In line with the unit “Who We Are”, they completed the task by exploring the steps for planning, taking action and reflecting to show that they are good communicators.

Volunteers from Grade 4 and Grade 5 also designed avatar faces of teachers to communicate their appreciation to all BIS teachers and celebrate World Teachers Day earlier this week.

Check them out! The teacher avatars are displayed in front of the Media Centre with letters of appreciation from the students.

Blind Date

Within their current unit, our German B students took part in an experiential lesson demanding them not only to use their German skills, but also to strengthen their senses.

First they read a German novel about a blind teenage girl, then they met a visually impaired person to find out what it means to master their life without eyesight. Mme Klaus from the Blind Association Bonn, accompanied by her guide, led the students through a parkour with the blind stick and taught them to write their names in Braille. Students learned how to play board and ball games, training their tactile and hearing senses, and found out how a phone can assist finding the right tomato sauce in the supermarket – all in German !

🍎 Grade 1 Farm-to-Table Adventure! 🚜✨

Our Grade 1 learners had an incredible day exploring food systems up close at Bioland Hochgürtel! Guided by Dorothee Hochgürtel, students dove hands-on into our "Farm-to-Table" unit.

Here are a few highlights from our trip:

🍏 Apple Exploration: We discovered different varieties of apples, learned how apple rings are made, and sampled delicious freshly pressed apple juices!
🐐 Farm Friends: Meeting and greeting the farm’s friendly goats was a absolute highlight.
🚜 Big Machinery: Students got to inspect all the cool tractors and farm equipment used to run the farm.

A huge thank you to Dorothee and the Bioland Hochgürtel team for giving our young learners such a rich, memorable experience connecting where our food comes from to our tables!

Last weekend we have had our Grade 9 students orientation trip and so much was learned! The photos taken by our amazing educators turned out great and portrayed the exact kinds of lessons and experiences they came across. Grade 11 Orientation Trip: annual rite of passage

Our Grade 11 students are on their way home from this year's orientation trip. No doubt much of what they report back to their families will be about the long bus rides, canoeing 🛶, archery 🏹, campfires 🔥 and hostel food 🍛.

Equally important, but less spectacular, will be their sessions on the Diploma Years, talking through the expectations and challenges of these next two years. This trip away is Grade 11's preparation time to get a handle on the curriculum, time management and support systems critical to their academic success and personal wellbeing. It is also a time to take risks, go outside their comfort zones, bond with classmates and experience some epic challenges.

Grade 11 students, we hope you enjoyed this trip! We wish you much success and that you have many more peak moments (and rites of passage) during your Diploma Years.

👩‍🏫 Apprentice teachers share their world 🌍

Just over a month after arrival, how has it been for our 6 newbie teachers? We asked them to share their experiences.

When asked about their highlights, there was pretty much universal agreement on the BIS community, their welcome and how well the transition to BIS and to Germany has gone. Cultivating positive connections to both students and other staff members was often cited as well.

To quote one of our ATs: “The highlight of my time at BIS so far, has been how welcomed everyone is! The staff, students, and community are so incredibly welcoming, helpful, and kind. I truly don’t think I have ever been at another school that has provided so much support and kindness as a whole. It has made both teaching and my own learning about the IB system so much easier and I am excited to come to school everyday!”

But we all know that moving, even in the best of circumstances, has a learning curve. Some of things they wished they had known:

• Something I was not expecting when I arrived here was how much candy l’d be eating!! I never knew I’d have so much Haribo!! :)
• I didn’t expect the whole city to have quiet hours on Sunday, Really messed up my laundry schedule.
• I wish I had known to waterproof EVERYTHING before deciding to bike to school everyday:)
• The amount of paperwork to do in Germany! I received a lot of paper mail in the first few weeks here so that was something I didn’t expect.
• A little bit more German! I knew a few basics but I am working towards getting better and speaking and understanding the language.

Apprentice teachers, you rock! You are great additions to our faculty and bring such joy into classrooms.

Beethoven Fest Bonn: Our music students performed in the new Beethovenhalle 🎻🎶

Saturday afternoon, Primary and Secondary string ensembles and BIS soloists shared their love of music as a part of this year's prestigious Beethovenfest. Under the direction of our Co-Curricular strings teacher Herr Aisawa, they serenaded guests at the Beethovenhalle.

With Beethoven’s music echoing through this wonderful concert venue, our young musicians put on great performances that show why BIS has been a steady component of this concert series for many years.

Huge congratulations to them for all their hard work, dedication and performances!

🔔 Do not be alarmed! 📢

The NRW state government is testing emergency warning systems today. This means that at 11:00 you can expect to hear sirens blaring, mobile phones sounding off and perhaps even see digital billboards giving warnings.

This is a standard, scheduled test and not cause for concern. The alarms will sound several times with a few minutes gap in between, and should be finished by 11:15.
