Call for applications - The resilience academy: Exploring livelihood resilience

The Resilience Academy:

In the most vulnerable regions of our planet, the impacts of extreme weather events such as floods and droughts threaten lives and livelihoods. The most affected regions include large deltas, small islands, and exposed coastal regions, as well as arid and semiarid lands, and areas affected by glacier and permafrost melt. The Resilience Academy will provide a platform for connecting communities of expertise (early phase practitioners, academics, and policy analysts), examining livelihood resilience in the face of local and regional realities,and co-creating concepts to foster resilience.

Legal Aspects of Climate Change: Lunchtime Lecture with Dr. Cosmin Corendea

Dr. Cosmin Corendea from UNU-EHS will be giving a lecture titled, “Legal Aspects of Climate Change”, at the Lunchtime Lectures event hosted by the Institute for Public International Law at the University of Bonn. The lecture will take place on Thursday 6 June from 18:15 to 19:45 (not at lunch!). It is open to the general public and no registration is necessary.

The 13th UNU-EHS InterSections, by Melanie Gall is now out. It draws on discussions and presentations given at the 2012 Summer Academy ‘From Social Vulnerability to Resilience: Measuring Progress toward Disaster Risk Reduction’ organized by UNU-EHS and Munich Re Foundation in Hohenkammer, Germany. It reviews existing research outlining the current state of resilience assessments and concludes with several suggestions for moving resilience research forward.

From 22-25 April 2013, the Seventh International Community-Based Adaptation Conference (CBA7) took place in Dhaka, Bangladesh. More than 200 researchers, practitioners and students, 1500 Virtual Internet Participants (VIPs) and over 4000 people taking part in the CBA7 conversation through IIED’s live blog and Twitter discussed on the conference topic ‘What are the latest approaches for mainstreaming community-based adaptation into international, national and local planning processes?’.

SOURCE 17/2013: From Social Vulnerability to Resilience

Focusing on the overall topic of resilience and social vulnerability, this publication presents the outcomes of the 2012 UNU-EHS/MRF Summer Academy "From Social Vulnerability to Resilience: Measuring Progress toward Disaster Risk Reduction" and discusses and analyses specific approaches or topics related thereto. Within SOURCE No. 17, seven scientific papers present different case studies, such as social vulnerability assessment to natural hazards in Indonesia or risk assessment to extreme hydrometeorological events in Italy.

In July 2013, UNU-EHS will host a Training School on “Field research methods (qualitative and quantitative) in environmentally-induced migration” for PhD and Master Students; in September 2013, a workshop on “Managing Scale and Contextualised Knowledge in Inter/Transdisciplinary Research on Environmentally Induced Migration” will be hosted in Bonn.

UNU-EHS´s sixth PhD Block course in South Africa, organized in close collaboration with the University of the Free State - Disaster Management Training and Education Centre for Africa (UFS-DiMTEC) took place from 28 January to 5 February 2013. For the first time, the course was held at the Provincial Disaster Management Centre of the Western Cape and not in Bloemfontein, as in previous years.

WASCAL (West African Science Service Center on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use) is a large-scale research-focused programme designed to tackle climate change and enhance the resilience of human and environmental systems to climate change and increased variability. This is a call for qualified candidates to apply for the Master's research program in climate change and education for the 2013-2014 academic session. Application deadline: 31 May 2013.

Short course: Technology in Disaster Risk Reduction and Response

UNU-EHS in close collaboration with the University of the Free State Disaster Management Training and Education Centre for Africa (UFS-DiMTEC) invites advanced post-graduate students and practitioners to apply and participate in the course.

The aim of the course is to provide participants with a broad overview of space-based and other technologies for disaster risk reduction and response. This will include available various tools and methods, analysis of existing international response and support mechanisms as well as the best international practices.

UNU-EHS PhD Block course “From Vulnerability to Resilience in Disaster Risk Management” 10 – 22 March 2013 UN Campus, Bonn, Germany

The UNITED NATIONS UNIVERSITY - Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) in close collaboration with the Tohoku University and the University of Bonn invite young scientists to apply for the 2013 PhD Block Course.

This years´ course will start with a Scientific Workshop on “The Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami 11 March 2011 – Lessons Learned and Research Questions” that will take place on 11 March 2013.

Main objectives of the course are to increase the awareness regarding the complexity and importance of vulnerability and resilience in the field of disaster risk management and to explore options to reduce vulnerability and risk by improved adaptive capacities.

The course is addressed to PhD candidates in the initial phase of their PhD studies. Applicants should have an interdisciplinary focus and work on research or dissertations related to vulnerability and resilience in the context of disaster risk management.

Travel expenses, local transportation, hotel accommodation and daily subsistence will not be covered by UNU-EHS.
