There are encounters that stay with you forever.

Freediving alongside a Shortfin Mako Shark is one of them. Their incredible elegance, power and unmistakable beauty make every encounter feel truly extraordinary.

One of the fastest sharks in the ocean, the Shortfin Mako is also a rare sight for freedivers. To share the water with such a magnificent animal, even for a few unforgettable moments, is a privilege I will never take for granted.

Some of the most important work happens behind the scenes.

For over ten years, I have been a member of the Safety Diver Team at ESA „Neutral Buoyancy Facility“ in Cologne, supporting astronaut spacewalk-training for one of the most demanding environments imaginable.

Yesterday, we conducted another team training session, simulating a variety of rescue and emergency scenarios. These exercises are designed to prepare us for situations we hope never occur, but for which we must always be ready.

The role of a safety diver carries significant responsibility, and it depends on continuous training, trust, and teamwork. I am proud to stand alongside such a dedicated group of professionals and to play a part in supporting the next generation of human spaceflight.

Freediving in South Africa, Port Elizabeth. We headed out in a small group on our private RIB and spent the day in the water with an incredible variety of marine life.

We swam with countless dolphins, bottlenose and common dolphins, often staying with us for long stretches. At one point up to 3! Brydes whales were around, feeding in the baitball together with hunting Dolphins…

We also dived with Cape fur seals, which are common here and always curious. Another highlight was seeing Sandtiger sharks, as this region is known as one of their breeding areas. Along the coast we watched African penguins.

A very direct and memorable experience of the ocean and its wildlife.

Ragged Tooth Sharks, also known as sand tiger sharks, are among the most fascinating species you can encounter along the South African coast.
Despite their intimidating appearance with visible teeth, they are generally calm and slow moving, making encounters while freediving both safe and unforgettable.

These sharks are commonly found in cooler coastal waters and often gather in caves and along reefs, especially around areas like Port Elizabeth. Seeing them in their natural habitat without scuba gear creates a uniquely quiet and immersive experience, where their graceful movement really stands out.

From the savannah to the sea.
After an unforgettable week on safari in the highlands around Nairobi, we continued our journey to the coast of kenya.

Our time at Coconut Beach Lodge near Mombasa was the perfect contrast to the wild landscapes of the savannah. Crystal clear water, daily freediving sessions, long beach days, and that unique mix of focus, calm, and pure joy that only the ocean can create.

A heartfelt thank you to the incredible team at Rhino Watch Safari Lodge , the wonderful staff at Coconut Beach, the dedicated crew at our dive center, and to my amazing travel companions. You are all truly remarkable people, and you made this journey unforgettable. .or.no.deal .in.blue @
