On the last day of our concluding conference, we are excited to invite you to the roundtable discussion QUEERING DOCUMENTARY ENDS from 2:00 to 3:30 pm.
In the roundtable, current and former GRK 2132 members address “Documentary Ends” from a q***r perspective. Q***r modes of thought and experience significantly shift concepts of endings, beginnings, temporality, and history — and have informed the Research Training Group’s work on documentary practices over the last nine years. The panelists reflect on the impact of q***r temporal approaches on documentary practices, discuss their implications for the work in academic institutions, and imagine a q***r archive of the Research Training Group — the institution that has brought us together and is also coming to an end.

We’re excited to introduce the keynote speakers of our conference, 𝟰𝟬𝟰 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱. 𝗗𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗘𝗻𝗱𝘀. Each offers a unique perspective on how endings can be rendered perceptible, imagined, or documented and how they give rise to new forms of critique.
𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗿 & 𝗟𝗮𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗠𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗮𝘂 (University of Arts Linz, Austria):

The artist talk focuses on Sommerer and Mignonneau’s art at the intersection of science, technology, and natural systems. They will introduce key projects where plants function as living interfaces that connect viewers, computers, and the environment. The following conversation will address human-plant communication, generative art, and their practice’s temporal and ecological dimensions.
𝗔𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮 𝗟𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗸𝘃𝗶𝘀𝘁 (Uppsala University, Sweden):
𝘛𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘯𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺 𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘯𝘥 𝘛𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘴
In her lecture, Lagerkvist explores the technology’s role in times of interrelated crises. Drawing on Karl Jaspers, she develops the idea of a digital limit situation, in which it becomes difficult to respond to loss, fragmentation, and dissolution in a documentary mode. Here, AI emerges as a dazzling symbol of both promise and threat—a semantic ambiguity reinforcing its hegemonic position. To counter this, she calls for a serious and critical engagement with the politico-religious dimensions of the AI imaginary.

Drawing on Foucault’s 𝘈𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘦𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘒𝘯𝘰𝘸𝘭𝘦𝘥𝘨𝘦, Wendy Hui Kyong Chun asks if LLMs can be read as instantiations of the epistemic structures through which knowledge is organized and archived. In her talk, she argues that—rather than simply fitting into existing theoretical frameworks—LLMs reveal the structural limits and blind spots of critical theory in the age of generative AI.

As our conference approaches, we are delighted to share the program for 404 NOT FOUND: DOCUMENTARY ENDS which will be held May 8—10.
Over three days, conference participants will engage in dialogues, including panel discussions, readings, and a roundtable bringing together researchers and practitioners. The program also features keynote lectures by Amanda Lagerkvist and Wendy Hui Kyong Chun, along with an artist talk by Christa Sommerer and Laurent Mignonneau.
In gathering here, we open a shared space to think about the documentary with regard to its ends and that we direct our focus to liminal medial and aesthetic figures of documentary modes of existence in scholarly disciplines and the arts.

Im Rahmen des Projekts „Unendlichkeit – Leere – Lebendigkeit” findet vom 25. Januar bis 31. Mai 2025 eine Ausstellung im Planetarium in Hamburg statt, die Imaginationen von Grenzenlosigkeit aus künstlerischer, mathematischer und physikalischer Perspektive vorstellt. Die Ausstellung wird mit einer Vernissage am 24. Januar 2025 ab 19 Uhr eröffnet. Neben einer Podiumsdiskussion und einer Filmvorführung im Sternensaal wird eine musikalische Performance zum Thema Kosmos die Teilnehmer*innen in das Ausstellungsthema einführen.
Gemeinsam mit Anne Hemkendreis (Kuratorin) haben einzelne Kollegiatinnen des Graduiertenkollegs die Texte für das Ausstellungsheft verfasst.

Am 28. November laden wir Euch herzlich zum Screening des Films „Die Amitié“ (D 2023) mit anschließendem Filmgespräch mit Ute Holl und Peter Ott, Hilde Hoffmann und Sarah Sander ins endstation.Kino ein. Der Eintritt ist frei.
Die Veranstaltung findet im Rahmen des Workshops „Unsichtbare Arbeit | Virtuelle Kollaborationen“ statt, der am Tag darauf (29.11.24) in der Universitätsstr. 105, EG 015 stattfindet.
Außerdem wird während des Workshops die VR-Installation „Der Wolf vom Königsforst und das Mädchen“ (2024) von Achim Mohné zu sehen sein (EG014).
Screening und Workshop sind eine Kooperationsveranstaltung des Graduiertenkollegs „Das Dokumentarische. Exzess und Entzug“, des Instituts für Medienwissenschaft der Ruhr-Universität Bochum, des SFB „Virtuelle Lebenswelten“, des endstation.kino und des Bahnhof Langendreer.
