Statement of Solidarity with the University of Kobani

The Kurdish Center for Studies in Germany, which has an academic cooperation agreement with the University of Kobani, is following with interest the developments concerning the university’s future and the process of organizing its status within Syria’s higher education system.

Drawing on our academic relationship with the university, we hope that this process will be conducted in accordance with recognized academic and institutional standards and values, through a professional and transparent assessment that considers the University of Kobani as an institution in its entirety: its students, academic and administrative staff, programmes, accumulated experience, and intellectual capacities, alongside its physical infrastructure and assets.

The integration of a university into a national higher education system should mean preserving, developing, and making use of its academic capacities, while protecting the rights of students and staff and evaluating programmes and qualifications according to clear and fair academic standards.

We therefore invite universities, research centers, institutions, and academics with links to the University of Kobani, as well as all those concerned with the future of higher education in Syria, to express solidarity with the university’s students and staff and support a fair and transparent institutional process that preserves the academic experience, knowledge, and capacities the university has accumulated over the years.
