What is next for middle managers? As organizations flatten and AI takes on more work, the role of the middle manager is changing. But could some parts of the role become more important, not less?

Translating strategy into the reality teams operate in. Exercising judgment when there is no obvious answer. Developing people. These are responsibilities that flatter structures and AI cannot simply absorb.

So perhaps the real question is not whether the role will change – but what middle managers will need to become.

On September 24, join Nora Grasselli, lecturer in leadership at ESMT Berlin, for an ESMT Insight Hour exploring what middle managers should leave behind, which capabilities they need to build, and how their day-to-day leadership practice is changing.

Moderated by Mandy Hübener, director of executive education at ESMT Berlin.

🎉👏 Congratulations to the Master in Science Classes of 2026 on their graduation! Last week, we celebrated our newest graduates at the Humboldt Forum and on campus.

In his farewell address, ESMT President Jörg Rocholl celebrated a particularly active class – one that shaped life at ESMT Berlin through student clubs, initiatives, conferences, and activities beyond the curriculum. As he told the graduates, “the quality of an educational experience depends not only on the curriculum, but also on what its students are willing to create for one another.”

A special thank-you to Katja van Doren, member of the Executive Board of RWE AG, chief human resources officer, and labor director, for an inspiring keynote address and her reflections on careers, change, and embracing the unexpected.

👏 Congratulations as well to this year’s award recipients:
- Academic Award: Fynn Barkhausen, Claire Miller, Georg Philipp Schmitz-Dörner, and Ferdinand Philipp
- President Award: Fynn Barkhausen
- Social Impact Award: Team Fifth Direction – Charlotte Chehardy, Daniele Dell’Acqua, Gopal Singh Rathore, Mate Szentgyorgyi, Darya Petrovskii, and Lakshmy Thampy

Part-time does not mean half the experience. So, how much can you fit into an MBA without putting your career on pause? For Tim Krewerth, part-time MBA Class of 2027, quite a lot. Alongside his full-time role at Deloitte, he is learning online and on the ESMT Berlin Campus, exchanging ideas with peers from different industries, and putting new perspectives into practice at work.

But some other memorable parts also happen beyond the curriculum.

A Global Network for Advanced Management week at UBC Sauder School of Business in Vancouver. Mentoring a master’s student. Getting involved with the Net Impact Club. Joining talks and events across ESMT and Berlin.

In our latest blog, Tim shares how he is making the most of both sides of the Part-time MBA – and why, just weeks into the program, he knew he had made the right choice.

How can an MBA help save children’s lives? For Cătălina Costache, the answer lies in turning business knowledge into humanitarian impact. And her ESMT journey gave her the confidence to take that impact even further.

As executive director of Polisano Foundation in Romania, Cătălina works to help children born with congenital heart defects access life-saving surgeries. While leading the foundation full time, she chose the flexibility of the Global Online MBA (GOMBA) program to strengthen her leadership, strategy, and decision-making skills.

“An MBA teaches you to think systematically about problems that can feel overwhelming when you are in the middle of them.”

Cătălina has put that thinking into action. Since completing the program, she and her team have continued finding new ways to advance children’s heart health – from launching Romania’s first jump rope championship for children to opening a charitable art gallery in Sibiu that raises funds for heart surgeries.

Her experience is also a reminder that business education can create value far beyond the corporate world.

Some decisions shape a career. Others bring families closer together. After Azer joined the full-time MBA in 2017, he built the confidence to work at Google, launch a startup, and become part of a global alumni network that continues to support him today.

👉 Years later, he convinced his younger brother, Eldar, to follow in his footsteps.

Today, they're both part of the ESMT community. They are sharing not only a city, but a school that brought them closer together.

As Azer puts it, one of the greatest lessons he took away from ESMT was simple: "I can."

🚬➡🌱 Small actions can make a big difference. During her MBA at ESMT Berlin, Anahita Moaddab noticed how many cigarette butts were ending up on campus. That observation inspired No Butts Berlin, a student-led initiative encouraging responsible cigarette disposal through a simple but effective solution: the No Butts Pocket Pouch.

Thanks to the ESMT Sustainability Action Grant, she's now bringing the idea to life right here on campus.

Watch the video to hear Anahita's story and discover how one idea can inspire positive change.

Do not fall in love with the idea. Fall in love with the problem. That is the biggest lesson Vaibhav Jain, a student in the Master in Innovation and Entrepreneurship (MIE), took away from the Summer Entrepreneurship Program (SEP) at ESMT Berlin.👇

For Vaibhav, the SEP reflects what the MIE is all about: learning by building, testing ideas in the real world, and growing alongside an international, collaborative community. From hands-on projects to conversations with faculty and peers, the program has encouraged him to stay curious, embrace feedback, and turn ideas into action.

During the 12-week Summer Entrepreneurship Program, Vaibhav developed OmniTrace, an AI-powered solution that helps small and medium-sized manufacturers improve production visibility. More importantly, he learned how to validate assumptions, listen to customers, and continuously adapt based on feedback.

Congratulations to Gul Sanliturk on being named one of Poets&Quants' 2026 Best & Brightest Online MBA students!🎉

As a participant of the ESMT Global Online MBA (GOMBA), Gul's journey is a testament to the power of bold career transitions. After training and practicing as an orthodontist, she successfully transitioned into corporate leadership, building a career at the intersection of science and business spanning marketing, international market development, strategic communications and strategy consulting.

In her Poets&Quants feature, Gul shares how the program gave her the flexibility to continue advancing her career while immediately applying what she learned to real-world business challenges. She also reflects on the value of learning alongside a diverse, global cohort and developing a broader perspective on leadership and decision making.

Beyond her professional achievements, Gul has also been an active member of the ESMT Sustainability Task Force, working alongside staff, students, and faculty to help advance sustainability across the school's operations, teaching, research, and community.

Study. Apply. Repeat. For master's student Victoria Landazuri, studying at ESMT Berlin and working at Bosch are two sides of the same journey. As a student in the Master in Analytics and Artificial Intelligence (MAAI), Victoria is applying what she learns in the classroom to real business challenges. As a working student, and now an intern, at Bosch, she is helping automate processes, develop AI tools, and drive digitalization initiatives.

"When I am studying something in class I often have a real context at Bosch to apply it to immediately, which helps it actually stick."

That bridge goes both ways. Real projects at Bosch deepen Victoria's understanding of concepts covered in MAAI, making every class more meaningful and every project more impactful.

Outside the classroom and the workplace, Victoria has embraced everything the program has to offer, building lasting friendships in an international cohort and representing ESMT Berlin at the Munich Young Forum, where she joined discussions on some of today's most pressing global challenges.

Her story shows how learning does not stop when class ends. It continues in the workplace, through hands-on experience, and alongside a community that challenges and supports you.
