This week, we are pleased to welcome our newest Part-time MBA, Class of 2028 to the ESMT Berlin Campus for their first residency! After starting their MBA journey remotely, participants are now coming together in Berlin for their first in-person learning experience.

And they bring a broad range of perspectives with them. Representing 22 nationalities, the cohort has an average of seven years of professional experience, with academic backgrounds spanning engineering, business, IT and computing, life sciences, and social sciences.

🗓️ Eight years after first visiting ESMT Berlin for a week-long exchange, Martín Leal returned to campus. But this time as a Full-time MBA student in the Class of 2027. In a recent blog article, he reflected on choosing the MBA as a way to rethink his career path after working in banking and the eco-social sector. He also shares what it has been like to study alongside peers from across the world, and how their different experiences shape classroom discussions.

He was also selected as one of the Berlin Global Dialogue Young Voices 2026, where he will bring his perspective on representation, inequality, and the kind of leadership the next generation needs.

🎉 Congratulations to Olga Melekhina, ESMT Full-time MBA alumna, for recently being recognized by Poets&Quants as one of the "MBAs to Watch – Class of 2026".

From transactional law to the circular economy: Full-time MBA graduate Olga's ESMT journey has been shaped by a clear interest in making business more sustainable. ♻️

Recently featured in Poets&Quants, she reflects on developing a biodiversity index for the coffee industry with Nespresso as part of ESMT’s Sustainability in Practice project, leading the Net Impact Club, and exploring circular fashion entrepreneurship during her exchange at IE Madrid.

After graduation, Olga continues this work through an ESMT Responsible Leadership Fellowship, supporting an NGO working to scale textile-to-textile recycling across EU markets.

Her story also speaks to what can happen when classroom learning meets the wider Berlin ecosystem, from impact-driven communities to the city’s circular economy scene. 🌍

One community. Many paths. Our latest Bergfest brought together more corners of the ESMT Berlin community than usual. Organized by students for students, Bergfest is our monthly opportunity to step away from classes, assignments, and screens and simply spend time together.

Last month was particularly special. Global Online MBA (GOMBA) students, Full-time MBA students, Part-time MBA students, new master’s students, and master’s alumni came together on campus – connecting people across programs, cohorts, and stages of their ESMT journey.

It was a great reminder that while every student takes a different path through ESMT, they are all part of one community.

And now, we are getting ready to welcome the next generation.

From ESMT to DHL. Yinghan, a Master in Global Management student, recently completed a Corporate Development internship at DHL, one of ESMT Berlin’s founding companies. Her journey reflects an important part of the MGM experience: career development is integrated into student life.

The ESMT Career Development Center supports students throughout their career journey with individual consulting, workshops, career cafés, company events and visits, digital resources, alumni connections, and internship opportunities.

For Yinghan, this meant tailoring her application with CareerOS, preparing through a mock interview with her career advisor , and learning from previous ESMT students who had interned at DHL.

Her advice for other students?
🔹 Start early and give yourself time to explore
🔹 Stay open to opportunities – do not reject yourself before trying
🔹 Build relationships with alumni, professors, and professionals
🔹 Do not underestimate communication, stakeholder management, and other soft skills

And career preparation at ESMT takes place in an international environment. With around 80 percent of students in Yinghan’s cohort coming from outside Germany, the MGM brings together perspectives and experiences from around the world.

“From the German culture onboarding sessions to intentionally diverse study groups and career support, ESMT actively helps international students build careers in Germany,” Yinghan says.

What happens when a Master’s degree brings together technical learning, international perspectives, and a real client challenge? 🎓 Fynn Barkhausen, a Master in Analytics and AI alumnus, recently reflected on the experiences that have shaped his time at ESMT Berlin. 👇

A recent highlight was the Analytics Consulting Project (ACP), the program’s capstone project. Working in a team of six, Fynn partnered with a cybersecurity service provider to analyze its sales pipeline.
The project meant navigating a large dataset, applying new machine-learning methods, and sharing progress with the client under real deadlines. For Fynn, the team’s collaboration and the client’s feedback made the experience especially memorable.

🌎️ He also had the opportunity to do an exchange in Mexico at EGADE Business School. The value of an excahnge according to him?
"The obvious part is the network and seeing how business gets taught and practiced on another continent. But the part that stuck with me was more subtle. [...] I came back able to compare rather than assume, in both directions. I stopped taking some of Germany's and Europe's basics for granted."

On October 5, join us for an ESMT Insight Hour with Eva Christiansen, partner at FGS Global, and Brigitte Lammers, partner at Egon Zehnder. Drawing on their joint study, "A question of culture: More women in leadership – a change in perspective” and interviews with CEOs, board members, and senior executives from Germany’s largest companies, they will explore how leadership culture, governance, and organizational norms shape representation at the top.

Moderated by Qiao Zhang, deputy director of executive programs at ESMT Berlin, the discussion will examine how CEOs and boards can foster more inclusive leadership environments, and what organizations can do to turn greater representation into lasting change.

"What I was seeing wasn't just a technology shift; it was a business opportunity." For Pavel Seraphimov, that realization highlighted the need for a different toolkit. So he joined the part-time MBA at ESMT Berlin to build it. As a Healthcare and Life Sciences AI/ML Consultant at Amazon Web Services (AWS), Pavel wanted to better understand the business questions behind technology decisions – while continuing to grow in a career that was giving him so much energy.

Two years, residencies in Berlin, and learning experiences in Vancouver and Shanghai later, Pavel reflects:
“I came in as a technologist. I am leaving as someone who can make better-calibrated judgments, grounded in data and proportional to the impact a decision can have on the business.”

350 years. Twelve generations. What comes next? How do you renew a 350-year-old bank while preserving the independence, judgment, and trust that have sustained it for generations?
📅On October 13, we are pleased to welcome Franz von Metzler, member of the executive board of Bankhaus Metzler, to ESMT Berlin for our next Today’s Global Leader event.

🎤 In conversation with journalist Astrid Frohloff, he will explore what responsible renewal looks like in practice: what should carry forward from one generation to the next, where a new generation needs to set its own course, and how an established institution can evolve for new clients, employees, and markets.

The conversation will also examine how financial institutions can attract younger talent, approach new technologies such as artificial intelligence without losing human judgment, and contribute to pensions and retirement security.

Jörg Rocholl, president of ESMT Berlin and chair of the advisory board of the German Federal Ministry of Finance, will open the evening with a broader perspective on long-term saving, investment, and retirement security in Germany.
