Aber was passiert im Akkusativ und Dativ? Warum sagt man „eine Freundin, der ich helfe”? 🤔

📮 Grüße à la carte — new on the blog!

Did you know more than two-thirds of Germans still get more excited about a handwritten postcard than a WhatsApp, a call, or an email?

In this month’s post, Karl digs into why — from fridge-worthy postcard collections to a 1988 German comedy where poor Irmgard Löffler can’t remember anyone’s Postleitzahl fast enough to keep up with her stack of Urlaubsgrüße.

It’s written entirely auf Deutsch — great reading practice if you’re past the basics and want to see real, natural German in action (with plenty of charm along the way).

📖 Read it now — link in bio.

Und ihr? Got a shoebox of old postcards somewhere?

If you’ve ever tried to make small talk with a German and walked away wondering if you’d done something wrong, you probably hadn’t. 🚬

In the US, small talk is practically a social obligation — the weather, the weekend, how’s your coffee. In Germany it’s not that people are unfriendly, it’s that starting a conversation with a stranger about nothing in particular just isn’t really part of the culture.

Once you understand that, a one word answer starts to feel a lot less like a rejection.
Learning the language helps, but learning the culture is what actually makes things click.

German has a phrase for everything — including things English hasn’t figured out how to say yet. 🤯

These aren’t compound words or vocab lessons. These are full sentences native speakers say out loud, regularly, that translate into pure nonsense.

If you want to actually understand what’s happening in a real German conversation — not just textbook German — our courses get you there. Link in bio.

Doch is one of those German words that doesn’t translate cleanly into English — and that’s exactly what makes it so useful once you get it. It can contradict, confirm, soften, insist, and reassure, sometimes all in the same conversation. Karl explains to Jackie five ways to use it.

If there’s a word that makes you feel like you actually speak German rather than just reciting it, doch is probably that word. Come learn it properly.
