We're 3 weeks into the new academic year at BIMM Berlin and what a 3 weeks it's been. 🤩

It's been incredible to see our new music, filmmaking and acting students settling into life in Berlin. We've loved seeing them get stuck into their classes, start making those crucial connections and explore everything Berlin has to offer. You've all come so far already and we can't wait to see where the rest of this year takes you. 🧡

So, with 3 weeks of classes under our Freshers' belts, we thought it was time for a bit of a throwback to where it all began: Freshers' Week.

Made to help new students settle in, connect with students from other years and get a taste of the time ahead of them, Freshers' Week was filled with incredible activities from scavenger hunts, gigs, open deck sessions, talks with Academic and Student Wellbeing teams, film screenings, acting workshops, language tandems and so much more. Bring on Freshers' 24! 🤠

Acting is coming to BIMM Institute from September 2023 and with it comes a whole new world of creative possibilities for our filmmaking and music students.

To get them up to speed with the craft, members of our film and music faculties had the chance to step into the shoes of an actor for a couple of hours during an exclusive BIMM Institute masterclass with Lisa-Marie Janke.

Lisa, a German-Luxembourgish actor known for her work on Netflix’s Dark, 4 Blocks and Tatort, delivered a 2-hour practical masterclass on foundational acting theory and practice.

Alongside her busy production schedule, Lisa will also be joining the BIMM community as a lecturer on the BA (Hons) Acting for Stage, Screen and Digital Media programme.

“I loved the masterclass! Lisa was a great teacher, was very passionate about her craft and the exercises we did got me interested right away. I also felt comfortable very fast, even though I hadn’t met the majority of the group before and hadn’t been in an acting class in many years. I found the experience very fun, and useful as a performer.”

– Symela Stefanidou, Popular Music Performance (Vocals)

Each month we'll now be selecting our favourite "Track of the Month" and feature it on our channels!

This time we chose featuring Koda with their latest release 'Sorry For What You Did'.
What started with a simple academic interaction in the BIMM Berlin classrooms led to Bentez & Koda finding a surprisingly strong creative chemistry despite the differences in their influences and directions. Over the next year, they spent many sessions going deeper into their collaboration which has now manifested in the form of 'Sorry For What You Did', an alternative pop track with a slick video all done with a DIY spirit.

Check it out on Spotify!

Want to be featured in the next edition of "Track of the Month"? Keep your eyes peeled for next week's Whats'On newsletter, where you'll find more info on how to submit your tracks!

BIMM Institute Berlin Alumni host workshop for Straßenkinder e.V. - BIMM Institute 06/07/2022

Last year we were delighted to start a collaboration with Straßenkinder e.V., an organisation that works to support homeless children and reintegrate them into society. To prevent educational poverty, they also offer opportunities at the Kinder- und Jugendhaus BOLLE, this is where our alumni hosted a unique workshop with financial support provided by Lions Club Berlin-Alexanderplatz.

The workshop that focused on teaching the children how to create Hip-Hop music was run by two of our alumni, Alexandrine Joseph and Ngoc Anh Nguyen. We spoke with singer-songwriter, producer and social worker Ngoc Anh about the workshop and why it is necessary for kids to have early access to creative tools and music.

'They get to learn how to express themselves in a creative, maybe even fictional way – most of the participants were teenagers and there’s always a lot going on in this phase of life. (...) It’s important to give them a casual but safe space where their voices are heard, and they are free to explore with no judgement.'

Student associations at BIMM Institute allow you to become part of a community that advocates something you care about. We met with the current student associations at BIMM Institute Berlin and want to introduce you to some of them. First up is the LGBTQIA+ Society whose President is Marina Pharis. We caught up with Timothy Halloran who is assisting Marina in running the society and asked:

As a society, what is your focus and goal?

"Q***r people in the music industry still face a lot of personal and professional obstacles that straight and cisgendered folk simply don’t have to deal with. But if we get together and support each other, we can create unique, q***r-positive opportunities. That’s exactly what the society aims to do: create a network for the q***r community at BIMM to make it easier to meet each other, collaborate, and create music!"
