Throwback Friday! Lol. This video is from one of our favorite programs we've ever run called Winners and Losers! It was a four-week deep dive asking: what are the values hidden inside games and who put them there? It was led by the brilliant humans Niklas Roy and Kati Hyyppä in 2018 and we still think about it.
Games are one of the best ways to sneak big ideas into people's brains while they're having fun and we never get tired of exploring this. This July we're going back in, this time designing video games from scratch using software, hardware, and sound. Creating alt ctrl game design as feminist practice, questioning who games are made by, made for, and what they could become if we reimagined them entirely. Same spirit, new questions.
Come join us in Berlin, fees increase June 10 so apply soon! https://www.schoolofma.org/summer-2026/creating-alt-ctrl-as-feminist-art-practice
Creating Alt-Ctrl Games as Feminist Practice runs July 6–31 in Berlin. Applications open! Women, BIPOC, LGBTQIA+ and others from under-represented communities in art and tech highly encouraged to apply!

So excited to have producer, DJ kidkanevil joining our summer school program on game design this July! He made an album, Bubble, based on an imagined psychedelic RPG, a whole world built around jumping between dimensions and moods during the pandemic.
His work sits right at that intersection of music and world-building that great game sound lives in. He's also got some genuinely nerdy thoughts on the early game music, Koji Kondo, and the strange art of making a character's jump sound like something.
Check out his interview on the blog, listen to his music, and come learn more from him in person this summer!
You'll leave with work you made, people you want to keep knowing, and probably a slightly different idea of what a game can be.

¡Hola a todes!

What if you spent a month in Berlin this summer making games that actually mean something?
Not the games you grew up playing. Not the controllers you're used to. Something weirder, more personal, more you!
Our July program is for artists, storytellers, performers, filmmakers, musicians and anyone else who has ever thought “I have something to say and I’d love to try and say it through a game!”. You'll work with open source tools like Godot and Arduino, use graphics, sound, and found objects to build games and alternative controllers as feminist art practice.
No experience necessary. We seek humans with curiosity and a willingness to be in a room with others who give a damn and who want to play, too.
You'll leave with work you made, people you want to keep knowing, and probably a slightly different idea of what a game can be.

📣 Guten Tag! We're clarifying our Artist-in-Residence Scholarship for Berliners since you’ve asked!
Since Covid, we haven't done as much in-person programming as we used to so this artist-in-residence scholarship for Berlin artists is our way of reconnecting with the local community here, which feels more important than ever.
We've extended our application deadline to April 30th and want to make sure every Berlin artist has the full picture before applying.
Here's exactly what the residency includes:
* A FREE artist spot in one of our summer programs (value €2k)
* A one-month membership to Make-Believe Studio after the program
* A public showcase to present your work at the end of the residency
What we ask in return: one skill-sharing workshop for fellow program participants during the four-week course. That's it.
Our three summer programs are looking for residents with practices in:
— Data & AI: investigative storytelling for liberation
— Game design: alt ctrl games as feminist practice
— Performance & media art: as research and public action
You don't need to be an expert — you just need a relevant practice and the desire to share it!
Berlin artists only. Applications close April 30.

Hola a todes!
