Poland has just uncovered 5,500-year-old pyramids that are older than the Great Pyramid of Giza.

Archaeologists working in the village of Wyskoć in western Poland have discovered two massive megalithic tombs built by the Funnelbeaker Culture during the Neolithic period. These monumental structures are nearly 200 meters long and about 4 meters high, making them the largest prehistoric tombs ever found in Poland.

Built from enormous boulders weighing up to 10 tonnes, these tombs were aligned perfectly from east to west. Experts believe this orientation was intentional, possibly reflecting ancient astronomical knowledge. What is even more incredible is that these massive stones were transported by human strength alone—long before the invention of the wheel.

These so-called Polish pyramids are thought to be elite burial sites. While human remains have not yet been uncovered, archaeologists expect to find grave goods such as stone axes, pottery, and even ritual items like o***m vessels. Such finds could offer deep insights into the spiritual and social lives of early European farming societies.

This is only the third time megalithic tombs of this kind have been discovered in Poland, and the first in this region since 2019. Their age places them among the oldest monumental structures in Europe, constructed at the same time as Stonehenge and long before the pyramids of Egypt.

These discoveries remind us that prehistoric Europe was not a cultural backwater. It was a place of innovation, community, and incredible engineering.

Archaeologists are now excavating a 5,000-year-old neolithic tomb with ties to the legend of King Arthur. Although the mythical ruler of Camelot is best known for removing the sword of Excalibur from a stone, there exists a lesser-known rock formation in the English countryside, called Arthur’s Stone, named after the medieval figure.

The excavation of Arthur’s Stone is the result of a partnership between English Heritage—a charity that focuses on preserving historic English buildings—and researchers at the University of Manchester. The stone is located in the West Midlands of England, in Herefordshire.

Confirmed information about the tomb and its creation remains elusive for historians. According to project lead Julian Thomas, a professor of archaeology at the University of Manchester, the tomb was most likely used as a resting place for human corpses, which were later rearranged once they had fully decayed, leaving behind only clean bones. As of now, nothing has been discovered inside the chamber itself.

'The act of constructing such a massive edifice would undoubtedly have been important, as it would have drawn people together to labor, enhancing social solidarity, and perhaps generating prestige for the person or persons directing the work,' said Thomas to CNN.
