What piece of music made you want to learn piano? 🎹

What was the first song that made you want to learn piano?

For so many people, it’s this one. “Amazing Grace” is simple, timeless, and instantly recognizable, which is exactly what makes it so rewarding to play.

Want to learn it too? You’ll find it for free in the flowkey app 🧡

I couldn’t tell you how long the dark stretched before the piano appeared.

An old upright, L. Neufeld, Berlin worn into the wood above the keys, resting in a room that had never held anything until now.

A piece of music waited on the stand. I’ve never read a note in my life… but my hands seemed to remember a song I’d never learned.

I’ve been playing for what feels like minutes. Somehow I know it’s been longer. It always is, here.

And when I finally lift my hands, the music doesn’t stop. It drifts off somewhere into the dark, soft and unhurried, as though the room had been listening all along – and wanted to hear the rest.

flowkey’s top 10 tips for playing with confidence this April:

1. Turn off the lights
“Is this the right way to sit?” “Is that the correct fingering?” In the dark, nobody can see your mistakes.

2. Move
There’s only one difference between amateur pianists and professionals – swaying. Erratic movement will not only give your audience a show and distract from any wrong notes, it’s also a great core workout.

3. Let your fingers flow
Struggling to reach the right note in time? Moisturize well, ideally with flowmo™, and your hands will glide across the keys.

5. Give yourself a round of applause
Confidence comes from within. You don’t need to impress an audience – only yourself. So put your hands together.

AD: Sponsored by our skincare partner, flowmo.

Warning: flowmo may cause itching, numbness, dry skin, wet skin, mild finger decay, loss of limbs, hand shrinkage, acid reflux, inability to reach notes, clogged piano keys, existential dread, mild paranoia, pineapple breath, severe overconfidence, fire, delusion, and enthusiastic clapping. Not suitable for pianists.

Chopin, but make it rock? 🤘👀

Sometimes the fun of playing piano is changing the rhythm, shifting the feel, and realizing there is more than one way for a piece to come alive.

Want to learn this piece too? Find “Prelude No. 20 in Cm, Op. 28” by Chopin in the flowkey app 🧡

Nearly 200 years after Chopin wrote this Étude, it still sounds as breathtaking as it looks.

In Chopin’s time, études were mostly technical studies, written to help pianists build skills like finger agility, scales, and arpeggios. Chopin helped change that, turning the étude from a practice exercise into something truly concert-worthy. Later composers like Franz Liszt and Cécile Chaminade would continue pushing the form even further.

In this Étude in C major, Op. 10 No. 1, Chopin transforms sweeping arpeggios into something mesmerising. Nearly 200 years after its publication, it still stands as a serious challenge for pianists.

Every great piano performance starts with a warm-up. Some are just harder to explain than others.

Whether it’s scales, trills, or complete chaos, a good warm-up can help:
🙌 Loosen up your fingers and hands
🎹 Help you settle into the keys before playing
🤩 Improve control, confidence, and reduce sloppy mistakes

What’s your go-to warm-up routine?
