"In the early 1990s a box of cassette tapes was discovered in the Library director's office labeled only "Sources of Creative Power." In the box, Jeff Katz, director at the time and newly in his position, found a treasure trove of content from Heinrich Blücher: not only audio recordings—tapes that had been converted from original reel-to-reel recordings—but also a collection of written and typed transcripts based on Blücher's work at The New School and Bard."

“Our newest experiences and our most recent fears are a matter of thought and thoughtlessness – the heedless recklessness or hopeless confusion or complacent repetition of ‘truths’ which have become trivial and empty – [This] seems to me among the outstanding characteristics of our time.”

Hannah Arendt and her mother Martha Sara Cohn, born in Königsberg (then Capital of East Prussia/Germany, but since 1946 known as Kaliningrad/Russia) on May 28, 1874.

She belonged to wealthy merchant family. Her father, Jacob Nochimowitz Cohn, had fled Russia in 1852 and emigrated to East Prussia fearing persecution in Zarist Russia. F***y Eva Sapiero-Cohn, her mother, spoke German with Russian accent, and liked to dress in a Slavic fashion, as Julia Kristeva writes in her book on Arendt, Le génie féminin.

Martha spent three years in Paris, where she studied French and classical music. She was also admirer of Rosa Luxembourg and an enthusiastic social democrat.

What is Wrong with Equality of Opportunity 09/05/2023

WEBINAR: “What’s Wrong with Equality of Opportunity”: The last decade has delivered increasingly bleak portraits of vast inequalities in income, wealth, health, and other measures of well-being in many rich countries. What should we do about them?

One common response is to argue that inequality is only a problem to the extent that it reflects unequal opportunities. In much of the West, political discourse tends to converge on the assumption that our egalitarian aspirations are realized once we have ensured equality of opportunity. Going further – aiming for equal outcomes – is often considered unreasonable, naïve, or even authoritarian.
In this conversation with Ben Burgis, philosopher Christine Sypnowich will argue that this view is seriously mistaken. She will explain why opportunity talk – and a host of ideas associated with it, including flawed conceptions of choice and personal responsibility – plays far too central a role in prevailing arguments for equality. For Sypnowich, an egalitarian society should not shy away from a concern with outcomes. Its goal must be that people live equally flourishing lives, not merely that they have the opportunity to do so.
