Korea Competence Week 2026

From 14–18 September 2026, the Korea-Europe Center at the Institute of Korean Studies, Freie Universität Berlin, in cooperation with the KDI School of Public Policy and Management, hosted Korea Competence Week 2026 — a five-day intensive program on the Korean Peninsula covering North and South Korea competence, a book symposium, policy paper writing, and a strategic dialogue simulation.

We are grateful to Ambassador Ko Kyung-seok for his warm welcome address opening the program.

Thank you to all our participants and lecturers for an inspiring and productive week!

On 16 September 2026, the Korea Europe Center hosted a Book Symposium centered on Prof. Keun Lee’s new book, Capitalism in South Korea, 1945-2025 (co-authored with Djun Kil Kim, Oxford University Press, 2026). The book offers a fresh perspective on South Korea’s economic history from liberation in 1945 to the present, tracing the country’s compressed development and the subsequent processes of decompression and diverging convergence.

We were honored to host Prof. Keun Lee (Chung-Ang University / Seoul National University) for an insightful author’s talk and lively discussion rounds with our participants!

Thank you to everyone who joined us!

Day 1 of the Korean Studies Summer School

Our first day took us to the Civilian Control Zone around Paju and Gimpo, exploring places where transportation, history, and the geography of the Korean Peninsula come together.

We visited the Inter-Korean Transit Office (남북출입사무소), which handled the movement of people and goods travelling to and from the Kaesong Industrial Complex, and Dorasan Station, the northernmost station on South Korea’s Gyeongui Line. From 2007, freight trains operated between Dorasan and Panmun Station in North Korea in connection with the Kaesong Industrial Complex.

At Imjingak, we saw the historic Jangdan Station steam locomotive, marked by more than 1,000 bullet and shell marks from the Korean War. We also visited Pyeonghwa Nuri Park and Aegibong Observatory, before learning about the history of the Unification Bridge and Hyundai founder Chung Ju-yung’s famous journey with 1,001 cattle in 1998.

Why do some states engage in so-called middle power diplomacy? Conventional middle power scholarship does not adequately explain this question because the logical premise underlying its definition of “middle powers” is either inconsequential or circular. Building on theoretical insights from status politics, I argue that a state's pursuit of middle power diplomacy is inextricably linked to status considerations within the hierarchy of international standing. I offer a theoretical framework that captures the subjective and intersubjective dimensions of why and how a state formulates and reformulates middle power diplomacy in particular ways over time. Empirically, I examine the emergence and evolution of South Korea's middle power diplomacy over the past two decades. I show how the government's differing conceptions, understandings, and reflections of middle power diplomacy have informed, shaped, and transformed its diplomatic practices.
