CItizen Science is an essential topic for the RuralFutures Project!
We aim to implement a network of monitoring sites and a multi-use evaluation framework of land-use change related to ecological impacts by adopting the principles of Citizen Science to rural schools in Uruguay. For that, we are currently investigating and developing concepts & strategies.
Two essential contributions for our work were the Master and Bachelor theses from our colleagues Ariel Araujo and Astrid Bosch: "Empowering Environmental Education in Rural Schools Using Citizen Science" & "Prototype App for a long-term environmental monitoring based on Citizen Science", respectively.
We celebrated together these great achievements! Congratulations Astrid & Ariel!!!

The master student Julia Schiller did her final thesis within the RuralFutures project. With the title "Native forest connectivity in agricultural and silvicultural modified grassland - A case study in Uruguay", she handled her paperwork and celebrated with us! We wish her success in her new life stage!

The RuralFutures team hopes you had a great holiday time and have started 2017 very productive! Our team is currently out of the Uruguayan's field, but in full analysis of the collected data! We are also in preparation for the next workshop.

Queremos compartir algunas fotos de nuestro equipo de educación ambiental, que está teniendo campaña muy exitosa y entretenida!
Tan solo quedan en Uruguay el equipo de polinizadores y el de ciencia ciudadana, que están realizando encuestas sobre apicultura y educación ambiental en las escuelas rurales.
Los esperamos en este invierno frío con vino caliente, pan de especias y velitas de navidad :)

Nuestro colega Thomas Bollwein representó RuralFutures en el "X Encuentro de Ganaderos de Pastizales del Cono Sur y el VII Congreso Argentino de Pastizales Naturales", que pasó en la Provincia de Corrientes, Argentina durante los dias 4 al 6 de Noviembre. El encuentro, realizado por la Alianza del Pastizal (http://www.alianzadelpastizal.org/), reunió a diversos actores (productores, científicos, asesores, trabajadores de diferentes ministerios, etc.) que trabajan juntos para unir la conservación de la naturaleza y la producción sostenible en los pastizales. Thomas aprendió mucho sobre el pastoreo de ganado y ovejas en praderas naturales y la diversidad de los productores en Uruguay, por ejemplo. Muchos estaban interesados en el proyecto RuralFutures y en la investigación que Thomas está llevando a cabo.

Our colleague Thomas Bollwein represented RuralFutures at the Cattle Ranchers Meeting ("X Encuentro de Ganaderos de Pastizales del Cono Sur y el VII Congreso Argentino de Pastizales Naturales") which took place at Provincia de Corrientes, Argentina during the 4th to 6th of November. The meeting, realized by the "Alianza del Pastizal" (http://www.alianzadelpastizal.org/), brought together various stakeholders (producers, scientists, advisors, ministry staff etc.) that work all together for uniting nature conservation and sustainable production on grasslands. Thomas learned a lot about cattle and sheep grazing on natural grasslands and the diversity of producers in Uruguay, for example. Many people were interested in the RuralFutures project and the research that Thomas is conducting.
