Did you know .......... The more that a baby or toddler's brain is stimulated, the more the brain cell connections will prosper, flourish and remain strong.
Touching, talking, singing, reading, smiling, signing and playing with babies and toddlers nourishes the brain and develops potential for a lifetime.
In addition, a rich environment full of interesting sights, sounds, smells, taste, colours, textures and language will build a foundation that will make all subsequent learning easier.
Repetition is also important for babies and children as it strengthens these new connections between the brain cells (a fact that is important to remember when you are reading the same favourite book or repeating the same nursery rhyme for the hundredth time!!)

Between 11 and 12 months of age, babies often become shy and they may look to the mother or father for reassurance.

Does your baby show signs of shyness?

Thanks to a landmark experiment by Andrew Meltzoff and Keith Moore (1983), we know that newborn babies can imitate facial expressions. What is so interesting is that your baby will actively study your tongue movements and reciprocate by sticking out her tongue. Even at this early stage, your baby has learned how to communicate with the adults around him/her. Lots of smiles and words of encouragement will prompt your baby to try again. Two-way interaction or turn-taking is a very important step in the development of communication and also your baby’s social development.

The first crawling sign may be soon after birth, when the baby ‘crawls’ up the mother’s abdomen to find the breast. Although the action is involuntary, it may be the baby’s first experience of tummy time. The reflex action may be elicited for six weeks to 2 months after birth.
It is thought that the action forms a template for later crawling. The crawling reflex may be diminished or absent in babies with central nervous system abnormalities.

Recommended activities:
*Dads that wish to encourage this reflex can sprinkle breast or formula milk on a muslin cloth or soft blanket.
*Lie on your back and put your baby on your bare tummy or chest. Talk to your baby to encourage him/her to look up. There is no other voice that your baby would rather hear. The warmth of your body releases important hormones that relieve stress, promote growth and promote bonding between you and your baby.

The pincer grip is well developed in the twelfth month and babies can manipulate objects with increased precision. The pincer grip should be equal in both hands at this age.
Recommended activities:
*See if your baby can grip the tip of a retracted tape measure and pull it out.
*Scribbling or painting on an easel will develop and strengthen your baby’s arms and force him/her to flex the hands back at the wrists. The action puts the index finger and thumb into position for the pincer grip.
