Application Deadline: 31 October!

Program Fee: €675

Open to all mediums and creative practitioners

Over the last few years, PICTURE BERLIN has learned new methodologies and frameworks for thinking together. These platforms continue to show us how we can build on sharing our user experiences of our lives. PICTURE BERLIN’s upcoming Winter Session considers the broad theme of caring for our artistic practice and as living beings; Ask your hands to know the things they hold, a line from the Kae Tempest song, HOLD YOUR OWN, suggests self-awareness, understanding and knowing. By using their phrase as the title of our newest Session, we will explore pressing topics in the life of an active artist through a series of online workshops on the following topics; Mental Health, Grant Writing, Nourishment, and Strategies of Working in addition to readings and multiple portfolio reviews with international art world professionals.

As our world has morphed into an unrecognisable shape from only a few years ago, how can we move through this new world as better artists and better humans? How can we care for, care about and care with each other?
PICTURE BERLIN is mixed discipline and welcomes artists from all nationalities identifying as visual, conceptual, video, writers, poets, multidisciplinary, performance, installation and photographers.

PICTURE BERLIN is known for its immersive programming. This unique online edition will have the same type of immersion by all of us (virtual participants and core group of Berlin based artists and curators) meeting daily for 8 days in total for 1.5 - 5 hours depending on the topic of the day.

Deborah Uhde, 2022, Embroidery on canvas, 101 cm x 101 cm

This is not a text. It is a written observation of the unspoken.

The space of the unsaid is a free space in which individuality, perception and the transience of the moment find a haven - at the same time the unsaid is a space of communicative power. Whose interpretation is ultimately the valid, the recognized one? Every single word, on the other hand, imprints itself in the field of the unspoken with its micro-needle strokes. Now prejudices come into play. What assumptions I have about my counterpart determines my understanding of the situation. Accordingly my behavior. My way of dealing. My strategy. My prejudices for the next act. Whose voice is heard? In this state, reality crystallizes. For the moment and the vulnerable being who simultaneously seeks connection and possesses willfulness.

Shannon McClatchy will be showing her work “Rising Star, San Francisco”, (detail).
In writing about her work, Shannon says:
My primary focus over the past decade has been exploring and capturing dynamic, temporary vacancy. It’s often silenced space, such as the uneasy emptiness of urban landscapes and buildings waiting for their demise thanks to economic change or gentrification. It’s a setting I come across more and more around the globe – from San Francisco to Dublin - as the pace of change in major cities moves at a dizzy rate. There’s a sense of melancholy that permeates these buildings, which elicits a variety of emotions. These were businesses that were someone’s livelihood, offices where people came to work, houses where people lived and raised families, places that had meaning to communities. I feel obligated to document these places before they disappear.

PICTURE BERLIN is thrilled to be able to work with Carolina Paoletti from The Onion Project again this Summer during our Summer Session.

The PICTURE BERLIN residents will be doing a food workshop with her during the Summer Session which will focus on the way food channels our personal stories around memory.

Food is the point of departure for Carolina. Carolina’s approach to story telling is immersed in her love for food and how food holds stories about our personal memories and lives through their flavours and smells.

The famous David Bowie album Heroes, was written and recorded in Berlin.
An iconic album that has made a mark on so many people world wide. ⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️
An album of stories.
It was also an album of healing for Bowie himself as he used his time in Berlin to reconnect with his artistic practice.

You can do the same. By reconnecting to and also enhancing your artistic practice in the city of Berlin through the 10 day Summer Session themed around Storytelling.
The Session dates are

A compelling part of PICTURE BERLIN is the way the program uses the city as a compass and collaborator.
This Summer’s Session is focused on Storytelling and it is impossible to think of a better city to collaborate with than Berlin - a city rich in layers upon layers of stories wherever you look.

This Session will involve a lot of walking - not only with our 8 hour walk IN SEARCH OF THE MIRACULOUS, but also with the foraging workshop, the cyanotype workshop and the PROJECT SPACE TOUR. The Tour is geared towards and understanding of the dynamic DIY community of spaces that continue to make Berlin such a dynamic artist city.
Spaces we have visited in the past have included; Kreuzberg Pavilion, District, alpha nova, die raum and Horse & Pony to name a few.

PICTURE BERLIN's Summer Session 2023 theme is Storytelling.
The program dates are 30 July - 8 August, and the application deadline is 24 April!

This Summer's program will be exploring storytelling from a wide range of perspectives including workshopping, artist studio visits and most importantly walking. The first day of PICTURE BERLIN is dedicated to an intense 8 hour walk guided by four different artists; Lucy Powell, Rik Fisher, Sophie Mayer and April Gertler, in various neighborhoods in Berlin. The walks are part of the ongoing walking component in the program titled IN SEARCH OF THE MIRACULOUS. The focus of the walks is the way the city, plants and the land under us are the vessels for the stories around us. The stories are not only shared but experienced along the way.
