With many a debate about when a child should start formal education or academics within a pre-school environment, this article looks at combining three aspects of early years learning: unstructured free-play, academics instruction (letter learning, phonics, counting, etc.) and intellectual abilities (problem solving, reasoning, etc.)

With more and more evidence proving that the earlier the better does not have an impact on later academic success, this person's reflection on academics is very informative, and rings true. The only issue we have abroad is that there should also be the opportunity to learn academics as and when a child is ready, so as not to hold back a child who is ready.

Day 51! It's been a long break from any crafting. Well, actually we have crafted, but life has been very busy to get anything up on here.

CANVAS HEARTS

What you need: paints and a canvas.

FOCUS: fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, creating a picture/pattern

I used paint pots with brushes on the end for ease of mess, but also because of the squeezing action needed to get any paint out. Perfect size for little hands. I bought these from Tchibo.
