Besitzen Sie zufälligerweise eine dieser Figuren? Und wissen möglicherweise nicht, wer die Künstlerin oder der Künstler ist? Sie stammen von dem ägyptischen Bildhauer Hassan Heshmat (1920-2006). Heshmat studierte 1957/58 an der Höheren Fachschule für Porzellan. „Ein Ägypter erlebte das Porzellan“ titelte das Selber Tagblatt 1958 über seine Figuren. Er arbeitete mit Holz, Emaille, Metall, Zement, Stein – doch nach Selb wurde Porzellan zu seinem bevorzugten Material. So konnte er seine Devise ‚Kunst für Millionen‘ umsetzen: 1977 kostete eine kleine Figur in Ägypten lediglich 30 Piaster (heute etwa 3,50 Euro), damit sie für nahezu jede Familie erschwinglich war. Zeit seines Lebens sprach Heshmat Deutsch und stellte in Ost und West aus.

This episode is about language in the South Caucasus, and the development of Armenian, Azerbaijani and Georgian during the Soviet period in particular. Ketevan Sartania, Gevorg Avetikyan and Mirkamran Huseynli discuss changing Soviet policies as much as local reactions and initiatives from the 1920s to the 1970s. They also engage with national minorities and their languages beyond the three 'titular' nationalities of this region. How did minority languages fare in the different Soviet republics? What was the role of Russian? Lastly, this episode moves into more recent history and the three speakers share their experience of growing up in the post-Soviet Caucasus. Is there a new lingua franca emerging?

The Oman Research Grant for visiting research fellowships of three months at ZMO, Berlin, in fields related to Omani studies.

Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient in Berlin, Germany is inviting applications for the Oman Research Grant 2027. The grant is funded by Deutsche Oman-Stiftung (German Oman Foundation).
The Grant comprises funding for a research stay in Berlin of up to 3 months in 2027 at ZMO, as well as travel costs to Berlin, for the successful candidates. We are seeking to attract outstanding postdoctoral scholars at junior or senior levels of their career who are engaged in projects in research fields related to Omani Studies.

Der DAAD Ägypten über ihren Alumnus Hassan Heshmat: Noch bevor der DAAD als weltweit 2. Aussenstelle (nach London) ein Büro in Kairo eröffnete, ging der ägyptische Bildhauer Hassan Heshmat 1957 mit einem Stipendium an die Fachschule für Porzellan in Selb, Bayern. Seit 2025 forscht Sonja Hegasy am ZMO zu seinem Leben und Werk. Am 1. Juli wurde eine interaktive Webseite freigeschaltet, zu der Sie beitragen können: http://heshmat.zmo.de

'Fishing Communities and Livelihoods in Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia: Bridging Historical and Anthropological Perspectives'

This workshop aims to understand how different regimes of domination reshaped fisheries in Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia and to explore how intensified extraction
of fish impacted both fishing communities and aquatic environments. It addresses the entanglement between societies, the fragility of aquatic and dryland environments and relations of domination under imperial rule, in (post-)colonial contexts, under state socialism or in the internal peripheries of independent states. It seeks to understand how communities that depended on aquatic life adapted to changing conditions, both on land and in water.

Global Heshmat 🖼️
When we exhibited works by the Egyptian artist Hassan Heshmat in Berlin last year, we became aware of numerous artworks that had either disappeared or whose whereabouts remained unknown. This was largely due to the limited information provided in the artist's autobiography, My Experiences in Art and Life (Arabic, Cairo, 1997). Although the publication includes a list of works with photographs, no catalogue raisonné exists.
Hassan Heshmat (1920–2006) achieved national and international recognition during the era of Gamal Abdel Nasser. Widely regarded as a pioneer of modern Egyptian art, he exhibited extensively around the world.
The interactive map we are launching today aims to document Heshmat's works in public spaces worldwide. For works whose locations remain unknown—or for any information that may help us identify them—we are reaching out to you. Please explore the map, and if you know anything about the whereabouts of these works, we would be delighted to hear from you.
Following Julia Tieke's audio exhibition H_Heshmat_digital, several people contacted us with valuable information about the artist and artworks previously unknown to us. Among them was the family who hosted Heshmat and his wife Zeinab in Selb, Bavaria, in 1957 while he was a student. We are currently preparing an interview with the artist’s former landlady.

„Geteilt – Vereint – Global“ 30 Jahre ZMO

Am vergangenen Donnerstag feierte das ZMO sein 30-jähriges Bestehen. Die Senatorin für Wissenschaft, Gesundheit und Pflege (Senatsverwaltung für Wissenschaft, Gesundheit und Pflege), Dr. Ina Czyborra, besuchte das ZMO zu diesem Anlass und betonte die Bedeutung des Instituts für die Berliner Forschungslandschaft.

Dr. Heike Liebau (ZMO) stellte die Geschichte des Instituts vor, das aus dem Bereich „Geschichte der Entwicklungsländer“ des Instituts für Allgemeine Geschichte (IfAG) der Akademie der Wissenschaften der DDR hervorging, bevor Alisher Karabaev (ZMO) die eigens für das Jubiläum konzipierte Ausstellung „Geteilt – Vereint – Global“ eröffnete. In der Ausstellung, die von nun an täglich von 10 bis 16 Uhr besucht werden kann, steht die Sondersammlung des ZMO-Archivs im Mittelpunkt.

Prof. Dr. Birgit Meyer (Universität Utrecht) hob in ihrer Rede den Platz des ZMO in der internationalen Forschungslandschaft hervor. Der alle zwei Jahre verliehene Fritz-Steppat Preis durch die Gesellschaft zur Förderung des ZMO wurde durch ihre Vorsitzenden, Dr. Thomas Würtz und Dr. Claudia Ghrawi an Yasmin Ismail für ihre Dissertation „The Anglophone Maktab: An Ethnographic Study of Language, Religious Education and Identity in Minority Muslim Communities" verliehen, sowie an Sari Chreiteh für seine Masterarbeit „From Russia for Love: Soviet Women’s Migration Experiences in Saida, Lebanon“.

Für den musikalischen Ausklang des warmen Sommerabends sorgten der ZMO-Chor und das Tschiltan-Ensemble mit zentral-asiatischen Klängen.
