ÜBER UNS
Sankofa ist eine afrodiasporische trilinguale Kita in Berlin für Kinder zwischen 1 und 6 Jahren. Sie wurde von Eltern gegründet und Eltern übernehmen eine aktive Rolle in der Verwaltung der Kita.
Unsere Betreuungszeiten sind Montag-Freitag jeweils von 8 - 17 Uhr.

ABOUT US
Sankofa is an Afro-diasporic trilingual daycare in Berlin for children between the ages of 1 and 6. It was founded by parents, and parents take an active role in the management of the daycare.
Our opening hours are Monday to Friday from 8 am to 5 pm.

Sankofa est une crèche trilingue afro-diasporique à Berlin pour les enfants de 1 à 6 ans. Elle a été fondée par des parents, qui jouent un rôle actif dans la gestion de la crèche.

UNSER PÄDAGOGISCHES KONZEPT
Ein zentraler Bestandteil unseres Konzepts ist das freie, phantasievolle Spiel. Es gibt Kindern Raum, sich kreativ zu entfalten, soziale Kompetenzen zu entwickeln und selbstbewusst ihren Impulsen zu folgen. Wir glauben, dass dies die Basis für Kreativität und kritisches Denken im späteren Leben ist. Bewegung, Kunst, Musik und Naturerfahrungen fördern die Sinne der Kinder umfassend.
Sankofa bietet Schwarzen Kindern einen geschützten Raum, in dem sie ein gesundes Selbstbewusstsein entwickeln können. Sie lernen, respektvoll miteinander und mit ihrer Umgebung umzugehen. Ein vertrauensvolles Team und Materialien, die ihre Lebensrealität widerspiegeln, sind entscheidend.

OUR EDUCATIONAL CONCEPT
A central part of our concept is free, imaginative play, which gives children space to express themselves, develop social skills, and follow their impulses confidently. We believe this is the foundation for creativity and critical thinking later in life. Movement, art, music, and nature experiences engage and nurture all their senses.
Sankofa provides Black children with a safe space to freely develop a healthy sense of self. They learn to interact respectfully with each other and their environment. A trusted team and materials that reflect their lived realities are key.

NOTRE CONCEPT PÉDAGOGIQUE
Un élément central de notre concept est le jeu libre et imaginatif, qui permet aux enfants de s’exprimer, de développer des compétences sociales et de suivre leurs impulsions avec confiance. Cela constitue la base de la créativité et de la pensée critique. Le mouvement, l’art, la musique et les expériences dans la nature éveillent tous les sens des enfants.
Sankofa offre aux enfants noirs un espace sécurisé où ils peuvent développer une estime de soi saine. Ils apprennent à interagir respectueusement entre eux et avec leur environnement. Une équipe de confiance et des matériaux reflétant leur réalité sont essentiels.

UNSERE GESCHICHTE
Sankofa wurde im Frühjahr 2015 von drei Schwarzen Müttern ins Leben gerufen, die sich regelmäßig mit ihren Babys zum Spielen trafen. Durch den Austausch über ihre Erfahrungen im europäischen Schulsystem erkannten sie, dass sie für ihre Kinder eine andere Zukunft wollten.
Gemeinsam entwickelten sie die Vision einer Kita mit einem afrozentrischen Ansatz, um ihren Kindern eine positive und stärkende Umgebung zu bieten. Mit Unterstützung gleichgesinnter Eltern gründeten sie schließlich einen Verein mit dem Ziel, eine Kita für Schwarze Kinder in Berlin zu schaffen.

OUR STORY
Sankofa was founded in the spring of 2015 by three Black mothers who regularly met with their babies to play. Through sharing their experiences in the European school system, they realized that they wanted a different future for their children.
Together, they developed the vision of a daycare with an Afrocentric approach, to provide their children with a positive and empowering environment. With the support of like-minded parents, they eventually founded an association with the goal of creating a daycare for Black children in Berlin.

NOTRE HISTOIRE
Sankofa a été fondée au printemps 2015 par trois mères noires qui se rencontraient régulièrement avec leurs bébés pour jouer. En partageant leurs expériences du système scolaire européen, elles ont réalisé qu’elles voulaient un avenir différent pour leurs enfants.
Ensemble, elles ont développé la vision d’une crèche avec une approche afrocentrée, afin d’offrir à leurs enfants un environnement positif et valorisant. Avec le soutien de parents partageant la même vision, elles ont finalement créé une association dans le but de fonder une crèche pour les enfants noirs à Berlin.

Die Löwen: Eine englisch-französisch-deutsche Gruppe für Kinder zwischen 1 und 3 Jahren alt.
Die Panthers: Eine englisch-französisch-deutsche Gruppe für Kinder zwischen 3 und 6 Jahren alt.

MEHRSPRACHIGKEIT
Wir fördern die dreisprachige Ausrichtung unseres Programms, indem wir englische, französische und deutsche Muttersprachler*innen einstellen, die mit unseren Kindern in ihrer jeweiligen Sprache lesen, singen und sprechen. Wir erkennen an, dass in den Familien unserer Gemeinschaft zu Hause eine Vielzahl von Sprachen gesprochen wird, und schätzen diese sprachliche Vielfalt. Obwohl wir uns für Englisch und Französisch entschieden haben – zwei Sprachen, die in der afrikanischen Diaspora und auf dem afrikanischen Kontinent weit verbreitet sind – respektieren wir die vielen anderen Sprachen, die unsere Familien und Mitarbeiter*innen sprechen, und bemühen uns, diese durch Lieder, Kinderreime und Geschichtenerzählen einzubeziehen.

MULTILINGUALISM
We promote the trilingual focus of our program by employing native English, French, and German speakers, who read, sing, and speak to our children in their respective languages. We recognize that a variety of languages are spoken at home within our community’s families and value this linguistic diversity. Although we have chosen English and French – two languages widely spoken in the African diaspora and on the African continent – we respect the many other languages spoken by our families and staff and strive to incorporate them through songs, rhymes, and storytelling.

MULTILINGUISME
Nous favorisons l’orientation trilingue de notre programme en employant des locuteurs natifs anglais, français et allemands qui lisent, chantent et parlent avec nos enfants dans leurs langues respectives. Nous reconnaissons qu’une variété de langues sont parlées au sein des familles de notre communauté et nous valorisons cette diversité linguistique. Bien que nous ayons opté pour l’anglais et le français – deux langues largement parlées dans la diaspora africaine et sur le continent africain – nous respectons les nombreuses autres langues parlées par nos familles et nos employés, et nous nous efforçons de les inclure à travers des chansons, comptines et contes.

1. Ist Sankofa nur für Schwarze Kinder?
Nein. Obwohl Sankofas grundlegender Auftrag darin besteht, einen Safe-Space für Schwarze Kinder und Familien zu bieten, ist Sankofa kein ausgrenzender Ort. 1. Is Sankofa only for Black children? No. While Sankofa’s primary mission is to provide a safe space for Black children and families, it is not an exclusive place. To maintain Sankofa’s main focus, the decision to admit non-Black families and children is made on a case-by-case basis.

2. What parental involvement is expected? As a parent-led initiative, we rely on parental involvement. Depending on capacity and interest, tasks range from administration and the annual spring cleaning to maintenance of our facilities and childcare during team meetings.
