GOOD NEWS!
!!NEW SERIES!!
Design Meanings is a book series of international publications in English and German that gathers contributions to the international discourse and critical reflections on the practice of design in its various forms, including Design Research, Design Theory, Design Studies, Design Anthropology, Design Philosophy and Epistemology, Social Design, Design Politics, Design Methodology or Design History.
Its first title, Design (&) Activism, is a book about how the worlds of design and activism (could) inspire each other. As Design and its conceptual, functional, aesthetic, speculative and interventional concepts inevitably affect our lives, it often actively interferes in common definitions, understandings and opinion making, which offers opportunities for ideological engagement (in a good or in a bad sense). The book focuses on theories and practices related to the role of Design in terms of addressing, provoking and creating political discourse. Starting from traditional forms of protest, visual languages of resistance, to new forms of digital participation, this will help us to better understand the rituals, structures and meanings of design activism in history and the present, clarifying that design is intrinsically social and supremely political. And it shall help us to derive arguments and examples for the transformative potential of future design (and) activism.

SPONTANEOUS COLLOQUIUM: Thursday, July 11
Dear friends of the Design Research Colloquium,
although the colloquium series for this semester was already over, there is still the opportunity for a spontaneous appointment. We are happy to announce the lecture of Dr. phil. Mario Daniels, who is a historian of science and technology, and will talk about "Huawei, U.S. National Security and the Political Economy of International High Technology Trade”.
The United States government has launched a far-reaching and systematic campaign against Chinese business activities in the high technology realm. “Huawei,” for example, has been ‘blacklisted’ by the Department of Commerce; the Chinese investor owning “Grindr” have been forced to divest its shares; and US-Chinese R&D projects are increasingly subject to close scrutiny. Clearly, these government interventions aim at the very foundations of the international political economy of technology sharing. This talk takes a closer look at the bureaucratic tools and mechanisms the U.S. government uses to circumscribe Chinese-American technological relations. Daniels will argue that to understand the current conflicts it is crucial to analyze the complex system of U.S. export controls – they provide the most powerful weapons the U.S. currently fields against China.
Looking forward to seeing you on thursday, 9:30h at Einsteinufer 43-53 (Room 203).

Dear friends of the Design Research Colloquium,
in our last colloquium for this semester, on thursday, 4 July, Paola Pierri will share with us her thoughts on "Design for Activism in the Digital Ecosystems: Stigma, Access and Inequalities”. Paola's research interest develops from her practice and is situated in the wider field of studies on citizens’ participation and the formation of the public space, and specifically explores the ways in which digital technologies are shaping activists’ tactics and ways of mobilising dissent. She is particularly interested in how design impacts questions of inclusion and exclusion, especially in regard to questions of politics of participation and agency.
Looking forward to seeing you on thursday, 9:30h at Einsteinufer 43-53 (Room 203).

Dear friends of the Design Research Colloquium,
on thursday, 27 June, Judith Dobler will talk about "Drawing in the Laboratory: Interferences between design, science, and technology”. Starting from manual drawing in the natural sciences, her research project “Drawing Together” focuses on drawing as a collaborative knowledge practice and examines the complexity of media interactions in an experimental physical laboratory following an ethnographic approach and drawing research. In her lecture, sh will present visual material from the ethnography as well as methodological and analytical drawings of a (mostly) invisible drawing practice.
Judith Marlen Dobler is a graphic designer, design researcher, and drawing artist finishing her dissertation at the Institute of Arts and Media, University of Potsdam.
Looking forward to seeing you on thursday.
