EduMatters Gathering #20 was a blast! With 25 attendees in Shanghai, China, we talked about the Sustainable Development Goals and our actions towards achieving them. A couple of children attended too - they are the most important stakeholders when it comes to deciding about the future 💫 If you are interested in education and sustainability, stay tuned for the online version of this event on September 20th!

“Mommy, let’s build a rocket together (out of magnet blocks), daddy doesn’t know how to.”

Surprised, I said: “Ok.”

As we were building, I asked: “How come daddy doesn’t know how to build a rocket?”

She said: “Because he’s big already. He doesn’t know how anymore.”

Those were her exact words. I still don’t know where that came from but it made me wonder even more:

Do we really grow out of creativity?
Do we get ‘educated out of it’?

And how can we (as students, parents, educators, policy makers) stop doing that?

I am honored and excited to be a poster presenter at The Technology, Colleges, & Community Worldwide Online Conference (TCC) Hawaii on April 16-17.

As TCC focuses on current and emerging technologies for teaching and learning, I'll be presenting my small-scale research on GenerativeAI in education.

The research was conducted among MBA in Educational Leadership students and alumni as part of professor Mark Curcher's course in Tampere University of Applied Sciences. Thank you, Mark, for your meaningful work and for actively inviting MEL students to participate in such events!

The TCC Pre-Conference was filled with so many insights and incredible people, and I can't wait to share insights from the conference on April 16-18.

At the second EduMatters Talk in Berlin we focused on the topic of Generative AI (GenAI) in education.

Professionals from the education, research, business and technology fields joined the event - a great combination of backgrounds and experiences for a fruitful discussion.

The presentation of the empirical research on how educators use GenAI sparked though-provoking questions and some concerns.

This small-scale research was recently conducted as part of my MBA in Educational Leadership ‘Curriculum Design and Implementation’ course.

The main question addressed was: ‘Can GenAI impact educational practices and if yes, how?’

I shared data on the number of educators who use and don’t use GenAI and how they implement this tool (spoiler: a lot more than you might think!). We talked about:

- GenAi advocacy
- Its implementation
- Efficiency
- Ethical balancing
among other things.

This was followed by a discussion regarding different aspects of GenAI implementation in education for example:
- Who actually owns the work if it was created by GenAI and edited by a human?
- Is it actually necessary for educators to use GenAI for simple things that can be done without it?

This even was based on the empirical research, which is available here https://medium.com//exploring-generative-ai-in-education-a-mixed-research-study-among-mba-in-educational-leadership-417fbe8e6b2e

It’s always inspiring to get together with people interested in education.

Stay tuned for the upcoming EduMatters Talk!

What does the future of education look like?

This was the topic of the first EduMatters TALK in Berlin a couple of weeks ago. After 14+ edu gatherings in China and in Uganda, the time has come to do it in the city I now call home.

It was a cozy and insightful event filled with stories from international change makers in education. But... Could we define what the future of education looks like?

Oh definitely no! We all know that we can't define the future.

What we can do is use past experiences and data along with current trends and research, to draw some assumptions.

Here I'd like to share just a few key points from our dialogue. They are based on the UNESCO 2021 Report 'Reimagining our futures together: a new social contract for education', and developed further.

Not at all to claim that this is the ultimate source of wisdom. My hope is that these points will help create more dialogue and discussion.

Here we go:

1📌 Overall, education has made huge progress globally. Yet, there is a lot more work to do, especially in the areas of education equity, gender inequality, digital divide, forced migration, to name just a few.

2📌 Learning environments should be places of safety and even refuge, where learners dare, fail, create and experiment.

3📌 Generative AI can help teachers save time and focus on students interactions, when used mindfully, ethically and sustainably. It was interesting to find out that most educators use GenAI in educational and overall professional practices, with some even thinking that they use it too much at times.

4📌 The future landscape of education is defined by interconnectedness, ethics, collaboration, solidarity, and empathy.

5📌 Education should involve voices of grassroots communities and social movements more than ever before as they are often disruptors and change makers.

6📌 Education is increasingly centered on real-world issues, supporting learners in becoming ‘change agents’.

4 years

Of not organizing and hosting education events are over!

Last Saturday I kicked off the ‘Berlin Chapter’ of our EduMatters Talk events for educators.

Meeting educators is always amazing but what sparks my heart meeting educators who want to discover, discuss, connect and make an impact. Actual change-makers!

I am hopeful. I am grateful.

The first event started in 2018 Shanghai with just a few people. Then more joined. Until we had 40+ participants in one event and 350+ active members.

Heads of schools, teachers, parents, business owners and anyone interested in education - all make up an amazing group of educators at EduMatters Talk.

Realistically speaking, it was quite frightening to start again from scratch in a new city. After 2 successful years in Shanghai, the feeling of uncertainty was not very nice. I decided to step into that feeling anyway, to get back to the project I'm so passionate about.

I am happy I did.

More events are coming. Maybe even with livestreaming.

If you were to join an event like this, would you prefer to do it online or offline?
