AI: Are we ready to hand it over to the machine? | Armin Berger | TEDxHUBerlin 10/06/2021

Artificial Intelligence: Are we ready to hand it over to the machine?

On April 17, Armin Berger took the stage at our "AI: A Tough Love" event to talk about how AI, like all technologies, is neither good nor bad, it all depends on us - the technology is neutral. Armin is Bündnissprecher of QURATOR - Curation Technologies project and explores the question of what we will do with AI? What kind of world will we create with it? He wants to emphasize that it is extremely important to be aware of how strong the influence of AI will be. At the moment, only huge international corporations, as well as governments that want to strengthen their influence on society, define AI. But where does the idea of a free society that puts people first and supports diverse, individual lifestyles come into play? He argues that we need AI that is trustworthy, unbiased, and transparent; an AI, that supports humans but does not control them. We are the generation responsible for the path we take.

Opening up the black box | Nele Lea Uhlemann | TEDxHUBerlin 10/06/2021

Opening Up the Black Box.

On April 17, Nele Uhlemann took the stage at our "AI: A Tough Love" event to talk about the decisions AI is already making today that we're not even aware of. Nele is an influencer with a passion for software programs and Artificial Intelligence and works at camunda Services GmbH, an open source software company, as a trainer and technical consultant and she highlights the heavy impact these AI-based decisions can have on our lives. AI already picks who goes to prison, it can decide if you get a job interview and makes predictions about you. Those decisions are often not transparent. It is hard to ask AI “why it came to a certain conclusion”. In her talk, Nele explains what it takes to open the black box of AI and how open source can help to add transparency to AI decisions.

404 - future not found | Anton Pohle | TEDxHUBerlin 27/05/2021

"404 - future not found"

On April 17, Anton Pohle took the stage at our "AI: A Tough Love" event to perform a play. Anton is an actor, writer and director, and together with his best friend and co-conspirator Sonja Keßner, he runs the Berlin-based theater company "Theater.Macht.Staat". He believes that art is the language a culture uses to talk to itself about itself, and that it is therefore the artist‘s purpose to express whatever is on the horizon of the possible; to express what has not yet been expressed. Finding new ways to do that seems ever so urgent; especially in the age of the smart machine and Covid-19. His stage play consists of two parts: The first one looks 5 minutes into the future where AI has already doomed us. The second part tries to see a present where that is not inevitable.

Getting serious about the 'I' in AI.

On April 17, Dimitri Coelho Mollo took the stage at our "AI: A Tough Love" event to talk on how understanding intelligence in all its aspects is essential for the progress of AI. Dimitri is a post-doctoral researcher and lecturer at the Science of Intelligence Excellence Cluster, at the Berlin School of Mind and Brain, and he is calling for a unified approach that brings together neuralnetworks, symbolic processing, and robotics. To create better, more general AI, we need first to understand more fully what intelligence is, in humans, other animals, and other possible
kinds of systems. Once we do that, it becomes clear how variegated and complex intelligence is as a phenomenon, indicating that in order to build real intelligence we need to integrate different AI strategies and traditions.

Artificial Intelligence Is Shaking the Labour Market; Let's Save the Labour!

On April 17, Kenza Ait Si Abbou took the stage at our "AI: A Tough Love" event to talk about how AI is affecting many aspects of our lives. Kenza is a Senior Manager for Robotics and Artifical Intelligence at Deutsche Telekom, and she makes the case that everything we are used to is being disrupted by this new technology. Many people fear AI, because they don't understand the technology behind it, hence they cannot adapt to it or use it to their benefit. But we need to change that. After the Industrial Revolution, machines took over the physical jobs, so people developed more cognitive skills. In this technological revolution, machines are performing cognitive tasks, so people need to harness emotional intelligence. But are we really doing so? Are we preparing the masses to be smarter than AI?
