### It's been a fun ride, but we are no longer active here. ###

GPPi is an independent non-profit think tank based in Berlin.

Our mission is to improve global governance through research, policy advice and debate. When GPPi opened its Berlin office in October 2003, it was little more than an idea. More than 10 years on, we have established ourselves as a think tank while remaining true to the founding ideas about the kind of organization we wanted to create. We have deliberately opted for careful and organic growth. This

Preventing Crises, Creating Prospects, Protecting People 30/08/2021

A few weeks ago, Germany’s independent Commission on the Root Causes of Displacement presented its recommendations. What do these mean in light of what’s going on in ? We asked our colleague Julia Steets (a member of the Commission) for her take.

🔹 For one, the Commission suggests an Alliance for Resettlement. Each member country should take in a number of refugees that corresponds to 0.05%+ of its own population (per year). For Germany, this totals around 40k resettlement spots annually. This year, part of these could go to vulnerable individuals who are still in Afghanistan.

🔹 The Commission also calls for a greater focus on internal displacement. The German government should prioritize support for at-risk individuals who have not left and will not/cannot leave Afghanistan. But it needs to make sure that those who deliver support stick to humanitarian principles when dealing with the Taliban - even if that slows down the delivery of aid.

🔹 Another suggestion by the Commission: Set up a German inter-ministerial Council for Peace, Security and Development. While too late to help address the situation in Afghanistan now, such a joint decision-making body could help Germany take more strategic and coherent decisions in the future.

For more on the Commission's recommendations, read the full report (in German or English):
