Planting Corn & Beans – Part 2

It’s time to take our sprouts to the soil! (We’re only posting it now, but we did it in June)

In this second video, we show you how to prepare the ground and plant your young corn and bean seedlings.

Here’s what we do:

1. Prepare the soil
2. Add a layer of clay powder
3. Mix in natural fertilizer (compost)
4. Plant the corn and beans
5. Cover everything with mulch to retain moisture and protect the seedlings

REASONS TO GO VEGAN
don't be scared to make the change now! think, research, ask for support - we're here.

ANIMALS. Animals are here WITH us, not for us! It’s time to stop supporting the animal product industry and imposing the human supremacy view on the natural world. Every living being matters and today we don’t need to be taking lives of others to survive. The production of meat and other animal products creates an immeasurable amount of suffering that is unnecessary and inexcusable.

THE PLANET. Climate change is real and scientist all over the world agree that we are heading into an irreversible climate catastrophe if we don’t act now. One of the most significant changes we can do on a personal level is choosing a plant-based diet, since animal agriculture is one of the biggest sources of greenhouse gas emissions, water pollution and deforestation.

YOUR HEALTH. Balanced vegan diet is the key to healthy lifestyle, reducing risks of heart diseases, obesity, diabetes, and other health issues. Since it’s been scientifically proven that our psychology is tightly related to our gut microbiome health, going vegan will also have a positive impact on your mental health.

YOUR WALLET. Vegan diet is cheap! Obviously not all those hip vegan products as burgers, sausages, vegan cheese or salami – but these products are not only unnecessary in your diet, they are also usually highly processed foods and not good for your health! Focus on whole foods like legumes (lentils, beans, peas, chickpeas), wide range of local seasonal vegetables, fruits and whole grains and both your wallet and your body will be grateful!

YOUR TASTE BUDS. Vegan food is delicious! Seriously, once you try vegan diet, you will see that it’s colourful, rich and simply the best! You will most likely discover new ingredients that you’ve never used before and the routine of preparing food can transform into an exciting journey of trying new recipes. There is so much to explore

We believe that it's a fundamental right of every being on this planet to be seen for who they are and to be fully supported. Due to lack of education and fear based prejudice, some have it more difficult than others. It is the responsibility of each one of us to educate ourselves and our surroundings to help fight discrimination and create equal conditions for people of all genders and colours to thrive and shine!

Speak up if someone's rights are not being respected, spread the word, educate yourself and share the love!

WICKED WICKING BEDS - WORKSHOPS IN YAAM

Throwback to a series of workshops we did in Berlin during November and December 2020 – in attempt to give more life and purpose to the surroundings of the soccer field, we designed a community garden consisting of 10 wicking beds, made of charred wood.

Charring is a traditional technique of preserving wood with fire (isn't it ironic?), making the wood resistant to changing weather conditions, fungi and insects. It has long been used in Japan for treating cedar wood – this technique, called yakisugi or shō sugi ban in Japanese, can be seen for example on Hōryū-ji Temple, that was built more than 1300 years ago – so if you had any doubts whether the charring actually makes the wood last longer, we think this is a pretty decent proof!

Charring is not only practical for the purpose of protecting the wood without the need to use any harmful chemicals, but it also creates a gorgeous effect - the look of the flame-kissed wood is simply charrming! :)

And last but not least, working with a flame-thrower is just so much fun! Have you ever tried? Let us know in the comments!

More about the wicking beds in the following post

CONTOUR GARDEN WORKSHOP – GREEN CLASSROOM

Here are some pictures from a series of contour garden workshops we‘ve done with a group of 10th grade students from Wilhelm-von-Siemens-Gymnasium in Berlin last November, in cooperation with Grüne Liga Berlin e.V..

Contour gardening is using the natural contours of the terrain to retain the maximum amount of water, helping to prevent the loss of nutrient rich topsoil and erosion, which would lead to soil degradation (loss of quality).

This means that all parts of the garden bed receive an equal share of the rainwater, which allows to minimize the need for extra irrigation. It is a way of working with the land, rather than against it.

And on top of that, we think that the organic shaped contour gardens are much more interesting and fun than the ones that are just... well, straight. So the contour beds are a win-win!

As a part of the workshop with the highly motivated teenagers (you can imagine their excitement, having to swap their smartphones for a couple of shovels! :)), we also created a double compost bay and installed extensions to the wooden benches, which will serve as a climbing support for kiwi plants!

Did you know that kiwis were climbers and that you can grow them in central-European climate too?

Let us know if you have any questions, comments, or a burning desire to have us help with your project or garden design!
