According to the toponymy, the name "Elqui" comes from the evolution of the word "Erque" used by the indigenous Diaguitas and Molles to call this river before the Spanish invasion. Its name is because of the low flow and since it only grows in times of thaws during spring season, we could say that "Elqui" means "Skinny" or "Thin" even though there is no clear definition yet.
