Late Birds at JFKS

Welcome to Late Birds, our bilingual after-school care at the John F. Kennedy School. The security of your children is of utmost importance to us. and 4:00 p.m.

At Late Birds we offer flexible, dependable childcare at the school to all students from Entrance Class to grade 6. It is a fun place to go to after school on days when additional care is needed. In 2001, Petra Rose created the Late Birds program at the JFKS together with the JFK Friendship Center e.V. In the upcoming school year 2017/2018, this program will be continued by Villa Grips Soziale und

Bildungsdienste gGmbH, an external care provider (accredited by the Berlin Jugendhilfe). Our staff will welcome your child after school in our three newly renovated rooms at the Elementary School Building. They will accompany your children to the Aula for a hot lunch or in our rooms for snacks. The children may choose among a variety of activities and will have plenty of time to play, relax or spend time with their friends. Children taking the school bus at 3 or 4 pm will be accompanied to the bus by Late Birds staff members. We will also make sure that your children arrive on time at their extra-curricular activities held at school. JFKS has excellent outdoor facilities and late birds is happy to utilize these resources letting the children spend as much time outside as possible. We play soccer, table tennis, basketball, and many other fun and creative activities outside. Inside we have a variety of board games, a huge collection of Lego and Kapla bricks, costumes for acting and sketches, and other activities to engage the children. There are also books to read and we offer the children in our arts and crafts room numerous possibilities for creative drawing , painting, and handicrafts. The children should feel at home at Late Birds where they should enjoy their free time in the school. To this end, we offer care in small groups and a warm and friendly environment. Our childcare team has experience with children of different cultures and age groups. Late Birds takes place daily from Monday to Friday between 1:00 p.m. on school days. We offer a maximum of flexibility – you are free to choose between one and five days a week during which you would like your child to spend the afternoon with us. Of course we can also accommodate your children on short notice. The fees to be paid are calculated according to the number of days or hours you book with us. We are also available to look after your children on school days with early dismissal, Parent-Teacher conference days, and American holidays, as well as certain weeks during vacations. For these weeks we plan to organize a special holiday program.

Dear Parents of incoming EC children,

Last Chance!!! We have a few openings left for our EC camp starting Monday!

We invite you to join our Late Birds Entrance Class Camp from 8:30-15:00 (August 21-31) that takes place right before the official EC start of school. Our camp provides a wonderful opportunity for the new EC kids to get to know their first friends and get acquainted with the John F. Kennedy School campus in a warm, fun and gentle environment.

In our small group we will explore the EC playground and school grounds, practice daily school and hygiene routines, eat together, do tons of arts and crafts, learn about nutrition read to the children, sing outdoors and play an array of indoor and outdoor games.

Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there. Today and every day you should be celebrated.

Thank you to all the families who have been joining us for our emergency care here at Late Birds.

The kids love making their own snacks in the morning. We try to be as creative as we can. From making our own sushi rolls with a twist, Earth Day pots, cream cheese with fresh herbs on homemade bread and more, we try to inspire the children to use their own hands to find their love for food.

Happy Halloween! Our Late Birds kids were in the spirit and our Halloween party was a real treat.
We had a fang-tastic afternoon filled with ghost stories, apple decorating, musical chairs, eating treats, making ghost lollipops and our famous pumpkin toss game. Don't be a scaredy cat to look at some photos. We witch you a Happy Halloween!

Our clubs are back in action!

Please email Late Birds if your child is interested in one or more of our weekly clubs and if we don't hear from you, sign up is on the same day for anyone interested.

If a staff member who is leading the club for that day is sick, the club will be canceled.

Mondays: 2:10-2:50 pm
Community Magical Helpers with Hanna outside. All grades. We start the hour with helping clean up our campus and end it with some self-made magic tricks.

Tuesdays: 2:10-2:50 pm
Creative Cooking during Corona Times with Debra. We will use the hallway tables to ensure our grade appropriate groups will have fun preparing and cooking Corona style! All hygiene rules will be followed.

Wednesdays: 2:10 -2:50 pm
Library Club. Lucy will take weekly trips to the library to check out books and read to the children as a group. EC will start and other grades will follow later on in the Fall.

Thursdays: 2:10-open end
Nature Club with Tina. All grades. Outdoor fun with herbs, gardening and planting.

Fridays: 2:15-open end
Open Art with Tina outside or in the Art Room. All grades.
Children may use our materials freely to do what inspires them. (Maximum number of participants is 12 and all will be distanced with masks.)
