Rhapsody - research and strategy for dementia in the young

During the last months the “RHAPSODY Carer’s Guide for Young Onset dementia” was designed and built up in three languages: English, French and German. The prototype of this web-based, educational and skill-building intervention is currently being tested in a pilot study by family carers of people with young onset dementia (YOD).

Major objectives of the pilot study are feasibility and acceptability of the program as well as the test of procedures and outcome measures for a larger trial. The results of the pilot study, including both quantitative data and qualitative feedback from participants, will be used to refine the e-learning program and to produce a final product that will be made available to organizations supporting YOD patients and carers across Europe.

In den letzten Monaten hat das Projekt-Team intensiv an den Inhalten und dem Design für den Online-Ratgeber zu Demenz im jüngeren Lebensalter gearbeitet. Der Prototyp ist jetzt in drei Sprachen fertig gestellt: Deutsch, Englisch und Französisch.
Momentan wird das Programm, das einerseits Wissen vermitteln, andererseits auch Hilfestellungen für den Umgang mit an Demenz Erkrankten geben soll, im Rahmen einer Pilotstudie getestet. Die Pilotstudie findet in Deutschland, Großbritannien und Frankreich statt und als Teilnehmer wurden pflegende Angehörige von jung an Demenz Erkrankten gewonnen.

In der Pilotstudie geht es vor allem darum, die Handhabbarkeit und Akzeptanz des Programms zu testen und zu untersuchen, ob die Messinstrumente, die ausgewählt wurden, für eine größer angelegte Studie geeignet sind. Die Resultate aus der Studie sollen verwendet werden, um das Programm weiter zu optimieren und schließlich eine Endversion zu erstellen, die dann auch öffentlich verfügbar gemacht werden soll.

Jacquie ist eine liebevolle Frau und Mutter. Doch als sie an einer Frontotemporalen Demenz erkrankt, verändert das alles: Sie selbst ist kaum noch als der Mensch zu erkennen, der sie einmal war, und auch das Leben ihrer Familie ändert sich drastisch - ihre Kinder erleben es beinahe so, als wäre ihre Mutter bereits gestorben. Sohn Jake zeigt in einem bewegenden Video, wie das Leben mit der Demenz heute aussieht, aber auch, was für eine wunderbare Frau seine Mutter gewesen ist.

Jacquie is a loving wife and mother. But then she falls ill with fronto temporal degeneration and everything changes: She hardly reminds of the person she was before. Also family life changes dramatically - her children experience the situation almost as she would have already died.
