ENVIRONING TERRITORIES: Data-extractive practices and the mediation of space in the Southern and Arctic Ocean

The colloquium brings together three different projects, all of which deal with the critical examination of space, environment and social dynamics. Their innovative methods range from critical cartography to performative science, autoethnographic narratives and artistic field research. What they have in common is their endeavour to bring underrepresented stories and actors (polar seas, East German lakes, post-Soviet women in rural areas) to the fore and to explore new forms of knowledge production and dissemination that transcend traditional academic boundaries. The projects illustrate the potential of artistic-scientific research to examine complex ecological and socio-political challenges.

Veljko Marković () is a Research Associate at TU Berlin (ifa) () and a PhD-affiliated member of the SFB 1265 - Re-Figuration of Spaces (). In his cumulative research, “Spatial Imaginaries of Property Porn,” he explores the mass popularisation of media content portraying property as an attractive commodity to be bought, sold, remodelled, rented, or experienced.

He is interested in dissecting the immersive power of entertainment as a co-production of cognitive knowledge on space, operating under the radar of professional discourse but growing by audience appetite for more. The space that emerges in between the attention economy of spectacle and emotional commodification is arguably co-created by desires for belonging into imaginations as possible sites for escape.

He will present findings from the qualitative research mix-methods, including videography, cognitive mapping, and document analysis of case studies, where he used them in the consecutive research papers on “property porn” to argue for spaces of transcendental knowledge production, spaces of unintentional queerness, and unplanned sensual spaces, highlighting their emergence out of tensions that arise from conflicts between contested lived realities and the increasing impossibility of homeownership.

We are counting down to the Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften on June 28th when artist group TRANSFORMA presents a unique multi-media experience in our "Haus der bewegten Moleküle" at Villa Bell.

Join us from 5pm, but stay till late into the night to experience the collision between green chemistry, art and sustainability in a unique installation in the Hybrid Lab. You won't leave empty handed either! TRANSFORMA have created a beautiful limited edition art work in the form of a poster that we are offering free to visitors of the installation. “Wir sind eine transdisziplinäre Forschungsgruppe, die in einem prozessorientierten, kreativen und partizipatorischen Projekt die subjektiven sozialräumlichen Erfahrungen von Vertriebenen in drei Phasen untersucht: in ihrem Herkunftsland, in Flüchtlingslagern und in ihren derzeitigen Wohnungen. Mit Hilfe künstlerischer und wissenschaftlicher Methoden vertiefen wir das Verständnis für ihre Wohnpraktiken.

Am 6. Mai 2025 finden die 49. Hybrid Talks „What the Fungus! Wege zu einer neuen (Material)Zukunft“ in unserem Lab in der Villa Bell statt, zu denen wir Sie herzlich einladen.
Pilze sind aktuell viel gefragt. Sie werden nicht nur als Lieferanten von Lebensmitteln, Getränken und Medikamenten geschätzt, neuerdings wird viel über die Nutzung von Pilzmyzel als innovativem, nachhaltig gewonnenen und biologisch abbaubarem Material gesprochen. Eine Zukunft, in der wir in Pilzhäusern wohnen, uns in Pilze kleiden, auf Möbelstücken aus Pilzen sitzen, beflügelt daher Wissenschaften, Künste und Design, begeistern darüber hinaus viele DIY Initiativen. Was ist eigentlich mit all dem gemeint und gewollt? 
Und: können wir darüber hinaus auch etwas von Pilzen lernen? Kann ein Denken über die Welt der Pilze und ihre Fähigkeiten, uns helfen, etwas für unser Leben, für unser Tun und für die Zukunft der Menschheit zu erkennen? Können uns Pilze vielleicht helfen, unsere filosofía (φιλοσοφία, griechisch für Liebe zur Klugheit/Weisheit), also den Wunsch des Menschen, die Welt, die Natur und sich selbst zu verstehen, weiterzuentwickeln?
Die Podiumsdiskussion soll zu einem Nachdenken über die Welt der Funga anregen, die über die Nutzung reiner pilzbasierter Materialien hinausgeht: Über ihre Fähigkeit, sich über Jahrtausende hinweg an sich permanent verändernde Umweltbedingungen kontinuierlich anzupassen, über ihre Intelligenz, die sich vor allem durch communitas (lateinisch für „Gemeinschaft) auszeichnet und den Weg für ihren evolutionär gewachsenen Erfolg geebnet hat, durch Austausch und Vernetzung mit anderen Lebewesen sowohl stabile als auch agile (Überlebens-)Gemeinschaften zu bilden. Wir könnten also viel von ihnen und ihrer Intelligenz lernen. Können wir?

Jeanna Kolesova () is a Berlin-based artist, filmmaker, and researcher working across film, performance, and installation. Their work examines how history and information are manipulated, and how imperial technologies affect bodies and landscapes. A UdK graduate, Kolesova has exhibited internationally and received multiple awards.

Heute stellen wir unsere zweite Referentin für das Kolloquium am 29. April vor, zu dem wir herzlich einladen!

Julia Lazarus forscht derzeit an der Graduiertenschule der UdK Berlin zum Stand des Wassers im Land Brandenburg. Steigende Temperaturen und fehlende Niederschlägen führten hier in den letzten Jahren immer wieder zu Dürren. Manch ein kommunaler Wasseranbieter sehen sich nicht in der Lage genügend Trinkwasser für alle Menschen zur Verfügung zustellen und auch die Baugenehmigungen für Neuansiedlungen und Schulen verzögern sich. Doch der gegenwärtige Wassermangel in dem Bundesland ist nur zum Teil auf den Klimawandel zurückzuführen, großen Einfluss haben auch die zunehmenden Industrieansiedlungen, sowie die Renaturierungsprojekte in den ehemaligen Bergbaugebieten der Lausitz. Und auch die Meliorationsmaßnahmen des 18. und 19. Jhd hatten weitreichende Auswirkungen bis in die Gegenwart. 
Julia Lazarus ist Künstlerin, Filmemacherin und Kuratorin. Sie studierte an der Universität der Künste, Berlin,
und am California Institute of the Arts, Los Angeles. Ihre Filme und Videoarbeiten wurden auf internationalen 
Filmfestivals und in Ausstellungen gezeigt. Sie ist ein Gründungsmitglied des Radical Film Network Meeting Berlin.

Today we are introducing our second speaker for the colloquium on 29 April, to which we cordially invite you!

Julia Lazarus is an Artist, Filmmaker, Journalist and Curator. She studied at the University of the Arts, Berlin and at the California Institute of the Arts, Los Angeles. Her films and video works have been screened both on in-
ternational film festivals and in the context of exhibitions. For her current documentary film “Northern Forests” she followed a group of ecological activists into the forests North of Istanbul to portray their mutual struggle
against the gigantic infrastructural measures at the shores of the black sea.

Title: 
Encountering waterfront shifting spatio-materialities in Lagos – an artist and a researcher experimentation

Through our ongoing collaboration “Amphibious Lagos”, we reflect on the modalities of making do with volatile worlds (Krause and Eriksen 2023) of lagoon waterfront urban poor residents, by recognising an amphibious enmeshment between human subjects, questionably-urban materialities, climatic conditions, and water presence/absence fluctuations, that coalesce around a “critical zone” made of technical adjustments and ecological attunement. We work overlapping drawing, loop animations and video, text, and field recordings, thinking about and through these languages both synthetically, metaphorically, and ironically.

Pablo Quiroga Devia is a Colombian artist, who lives and works in Lisbon. He works through drawing, sculpture and installation. Particularly, for him the process of inserting species into new ecosystems is the starting point for analysing definitions of identity and landscape. ()

Francesca Ceola is a geographer and PhD candidate at the Habitat Unit -Technische Universität Berlin. She is research assistant at the CRC1265 sub-project C08 Architectures of Asylum where she focuses on mapping the intersections between forced displacement, makeshift urbanisms, and socio-political ecologies in shifting landscapes in Lagos.
