Do Facebook, Instagram and co. lead to political polarisation?
Hertie School Professor Drew Dimmery debunked this myth in his research: deactivating Facebook and Instagram accounts before the 2020 US election had little effect on political polarisation!
However, that's not to say logging off had no effect: users in the study paid less attention to political news and were less likely to believe misinformation.

Message from President Cornelia Woll concerning the recent attack on Hertie alum David Ramos Félix (MPP 2023) in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico.
Dear Hertie Community,
David Ramos Félix (Class of 2023) was violently attacked in Juarez, Mexico, in his role as political campaign coordinator for Manuel Dick Alarcon, a mayoral candidate in the Mexican elections on June 2. He suffered serious blows from two assailants, but fortunately is not in life-threatening conditions.
Physical assaults are generally unacceptable and especially in political life a despicable and detestable act to intimidate political opponents. We hope with David that justice will be done quickly to hold his attackers accountable. We are also deeply shaken to see such acts of political violence touch another member of the Hertie School community.
Many of you know David, who has been a engaged and enthusiastic student, classmate and friend. He has been particularly active in bringing Latin American politics to Berlin, not least in his role as general coordinator of Hertie School Latin America Club. To express our solidarity with him and send messages of support as he is trying to recover from the attack, we have created a message board via Padlet: https://padlet.com/HertieAlumniAffairs/messages-in-solidarity-with-david-qr7iey0i07zavrbh
Please feel free to add your message until 10 June at the latest.
Warm regards,
Cornelia Woll

Your plane crashed and you're stranded in the middle of a desert. Which items are most useful for your survival: sunglasses or a mirror? A pistol or a bottle of vodka?
This discussion is a powerful teaching tool used by Professor Sébastien Mena in his "Management & Leadership" class. The Desert Survival Exercise pushes students to think critically, collaborate effectively, and uncover the hidden dynamics within their team.
Recently, 23 Master of Public Policy students took on this challenge, navigating debates over the usefulness of 15 different items. The exercise taught them crucial lessons about team dynamics, leadership, and decision-making under pressure.
Key insights included:
- The importance of agreeing on a strategy before diving into decision-making.
- Recognising and leveraging the diverse skills within a team.
- Understanding how social relationships impact work efficiency and decision acceptance.

Security concerns in Europe have put enlargement back on the agenda, will the European Parliament election results change that?
We spoke to Besa Shahini, Henrik Enderlein Fellow at the Jacques Delors Centre and former Albanian Minister of Education, about her EU to go special podcast "Towards Enlargement".
In 8 episodes, she tackles EU accession in the Western Balkans and explains why the election results could put the process at risk.
She tells the story of how essential enlargement is for both the Western Balkans and the EU as a whole.
Who do you hope to reach with your podcast? 💭
"Students who are interested in international relations focussing on the EU and policymakers working on enlargement."
How could the results of the upcoming European Parliament election impact the debate on enlargement? 💭
"If anti-European populists are as successful as forecasts predict, enlargement policy in general would be at risk, not just the accession of the Western Balkans."

Congratulations to our alum Faruk Tuncer for winning the Alumni Achievement Award 2024! 🎉
The founder and CEO of digital venture Polyteia is awarded for his mission to reform German public administration with the help of digitalisation and AI.
After some professional stops in politics and public administration, the Master of Public Policy alum (MPP 2016) realised that many public officials still rely on paper-based registers to tailor citizen services. That's why he founded Polyteia six years ago: the business connects municipal, state and federal registers digitally. This allows public officials to evaluate needs such as how many schools or family services are needed for a specific area.
Having studied at a public policy school, Tuncer encourages fellow alumni to use their governance knowledge for business with social impact.
