“Get out of your comfort zone!” – You probably have been on the giving or receiving end of this advice more than once. But what exactly happens when we dare to change our comfortable day-to-day patterns?

Stepping beyond the safety of our comfort zones can be scary. But when we really investigate our choices and become aware of them, we move closer to ourselves. On our journey to becoming a conscious leader, we take the courage to feel uncomfortable. It might be challenging — we call it a hero’s journey, after all — but it can reveal hidden treasures within ourselves that we didn’t even know were there.

When we introduced this reflection prompt at our Virtual Summit last week, it inspired a dozen of deeply personal sharings and intense discussions. The term "conscious leadership" is omnipresent. But what does it mean? If you ask Google, it will return 40 million search results. Every company in the field has their own definition of what it means to "lead consciously".

It's a complex topic, for sure. But what if it wasn't? What if we could break it down into a simple formula like Einstein did for the theory of relativity? Well, we can:

IQ + EQ = CQ

Let's look at the components in detail:

IQ is the place of individual and collective awareness and intelligence. Here we learn about and strengthen our leadership, we gain insights into who we are, who others are, and how we operate in the world. We integrate the feedback of others to help us see more of ourselves.

EQ is where we develop empathy for ourselves and others. We loosen the grip on what holds us inside our comfort zones. We practice stepping outside of our own stories and creating space for the stories of others – inviting their ideas and wisdom to influence our own.

CQ is the collective space where we develop insights into whole systems. We connect with the physical, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual needs of individuals and organizations to co-create different systems. Systems that bring personal, organizational, and societal fulfillment for all. In CQ, we co-create through collective wisdom. This is the transformation that happens when individuals give up on their need to be right, wise, or a certain someone or something. There are many examples of when this happens, like the sports team or musical orchestra that are in tune and create a coherence that is larger than the sum of its parts.

In summary: IQ, EQ, and CQ are the journey of initiating and nurturing trust and bringing our purpose alive. It's a journey toward collective intelligence, empathy, and a more conscious future.
