In the business world and beyond, we are often trained to engage in advice-giving communication. Any chance "to be the expert" gives most of us a little ego-boost. However, the truth is that our advice is not always needed (or even asked for in the first place).

One of the core principles of The Argonauts’ approach is to avoid giving advice. Giving advice is so ingrained in our everyday conversations that explicitly NOT doing this feels very unusual at first.

As a rule of thumb: The next time you catch yourself starting a sentence with “you should (not)”, “you need to”, or “you have to”, you are likely about to present your advice to someone. Now, why would this be bad, you may ask? It is not – if the advice has been asked for. However, if it is unsolicited, these statements break down the empathetic connection between us and the other, no matter how well-intended the advice may have been.

Instead, we can shift our focus to genuinely seeing, hearing, and understanding another person and their situation. Or, in the words of Parker J. Palmer:

“The human soul doesn’t want to be advised or fixed or saved. It simply wants to be witnessed — to be seen, heard and companioned exactly as it is."

“Get out of your comfort zone!” – You probably have been on the giving or receiving end of this advice more than once. But what exactly happens when we dare to change our comfortable day-to-day patterns?

Stepping beyond the safety of our comfort zones can be scary. But when we really investigate our choices and become aware of them, we move closer to ourselves. On our journey to becoming a conscious leader, we take the courage to feel uncomfortable. It might be challenging — we call it a hero’s journey, after all — but it can reveal hidden treasures within ourselves that we didn’t even know were there.

The "loneliness pandemic", as coined by former U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, is seeping through all layers of society. The world increasingly feels brittle, anxious, and incomprehensible. A hopeless situation, if it weren't for a potent antidote: Aliveness as a way of being (and thinking).

Argonauts Founder Stefan Beiten explores this concept in a three-part essay "From Alienation to Aliveness". Read part 1 here – and while you do, you may already ask yourself: What makes YOU come TRULY ALIVE? 💭

An Essay by Stefan Beiten In this era of escalating alienation, I find myself at a pivotal juncture, reflecting how our societies have evolved from the “VUCA” environment of the past decades to the current “BANI” landscape: Volatility, which I was still in the process of adapting to, has now...

You have probably heard of the term "psychological safety." It describes an environment that feels safe to admit mistakes, take risks, and speak up about concerns or disagreements without fear of negative consequences. Recently, social scientists discovered that psychological safety is a basic human need; it is crucial to allow people to be at their best – whether at work, school, or home.

Leaders play a vital role in enabling a psychologically safe work environment. And that is also in their best interest – countless studies have shown the multifaceted benefits of psychological safety in the workplace.

We have compiled 4 behaviors that contribute to building a psychologically safe environment you can practice in your team or at home.
