The Argonauts

In the business world and beyond, we are often trained to engage in advice-giving communication. Any chance "to be the expert" gives most of us a little ego-boost. However, the truth is that our advice is not always needed (or even asked for in the first place).

One of the core principles of The Argonauts’ approach is to avoid giving advice. Giving advice is so ingrained in our everyday conversations that explicitly NOT doing this feels very unusual at first.

As a rule of thumb: The next time you catch yourself starting a sentence with “you should (not)”, “you need to”, or “you have to”, you are likely about to present your advice to someone. Now, why would this be bad, you may ask? It is not – if the advice has been asked for. However, if it is unsolicited, these statements break down the empathetic connection between us and the other, no matter how well-intended the advice may have been.

Instead, we can shift our focus to genuinely seeing, hearing, and understanding another person and their situation. Or, in the words of Parker J. Palmer:

“The human soul doesn’t want to be advised or fixed or saved. It simply wants to be witnessed — to be seen, heard and companioned exactly as it is."
